  • Paging @quig ... are you out there? any validity to this rumor?

Is it the same folks? New folks under a new nae? New folks under the old name?

  • We walked by.... no action! Waaaa...

  • last i heard was this article back in october, that they were scheduled to open on dec 1... new owner, new name.

    http://prospectheights.patch.com/articles/cheers-community-board-approves-new-bar-restaurant

On the corner of Underhill Ave. and Dean St., in the space once inhabited by well-beloved Tavern on Dean, a bar called Dean Street will open this winter. The owner, John Longo, said the bar, which he hopes to open by Dec. 1, will be open until 4am on weekends.

  • @dailyheights Windows papered. Depending on what they want to launch, they could get it up and running pretty quick.

I'm just curious if any of the regulars are going to come back.

  • We will go back.... Hopefully it will be nice and the burgers good! We lost Snooky's and Freddy's, the loss of the Tavern set us over the edge!

  • You will never catch me in any bar/restaurant that opens in that space unless I know for sure that the POS landlord has no interest in it.

  • Looks like they should be opening soon -

  • Spotted Pig and Four & Twenty Blackbirds alumni? Sign me up.

  • Looks and sounds very promising to me.

Also happy to hear of another brunch option in PH.

I can only think of 2 decent options currently and that is pushing it!

I must say I was also never overly impressed was Tavern on Dean. It seemed to be rather hit or miss with quality and service.

  • Uhm I can think of at least 5 Great brunch options in PH.

    Tom's

    Cheryl's

    Flatbush Farm

    La Gamin

    Beast

    Dont diss the hood!

  • You may want to change out Flatbush Farm with something like Cornelius. As I don't believe Farm to be in PH at least as far as I know.

As for the rest of the options you list the main problem is that they have almost nothing for people who don't want something sweeet (pancakes/french toast) and or don't eat meat or dairy.

I don't find this to be an unreasonable request considering this is NYC. Of course I am entitled to my opinion as are you.

  • Tavern on Dean's strength may be that it is located away from many other similar establishments.

....the site just sort of exists "down there", complete with its backyard waiting to be developed into an outdoor seating area.

Like its prior incarnation, it could become a destination for people "in the know". It seemed to do fine for years before closing.

  • I guess you do have to drop the Farm as it's not really in the 'hood, although of course it's just across the street. As a substitute I'd skip Cornelius - it's expensive and I've had some lousy dishes there. I've heard raves about brunch at The Vanderbilt, and if it's half as good as dinner then you're all set. I've heard it's much cheaper than dinner as well.

I'd also warn against brunch at Pequena. The drinks may be good, but the chilaquiles were bland and soggy.

Also, try Pure, right across from the old Tavern on Dean site.

Just so there is no confusion the place you are talking about is Purity.

  • You must be joking.

Purity is awful. It does not even compare to any of the other places already mentioned.

  • There's also Ortine for brunch!

  • It is in Crown Heights, though right on the much contested border - The Spot at Prospect and Grand (just a few feet away from the corner of Washington & Prospect). An uninspiring name for a great little restaurant that has good delivery and a generally very friendly staff. Also, unlimited mimosa brunch, which generaly makes my wife extremely happy with life.

I live on the block and I *still* haven't been able to drag myself in there because of the name...

  • My husband stopped by yesterday and spoke to some one coming up of the restaurant who told him that they have had two soft openings and should open soon. I looked at the menu on Grub Street and it ain't that interesting...

  • went last night. need to work out their kinks and their menu. they were out of 4 or 5 things on the menu.

  • You're missing out, WhyFi. The chicekn parm entree is like butter, while the stuffed chicken is quite tasty as well. The burgers are damned fine as well, and the brunch memo is good, though I always go for the large, overflowing omlette option.

    .

  • no need to go now. wait two months. it will be worth the wait at that point. too much hype now and not enough substance.

  • How's the beer selection!!???

  • Mostly Kelso on draft.

...but Kelso has some good ones, and they were only $4.

Every table and every stool was full, despite it being a snowy Wednesday night and having "just reopened"

  • Man, this used to be the spot back in the day when it was called Dean St Cafe. I really miss that place they used to have the best jazz jams and bangin food. I sort of have a stigma about Manhattan transplants being in that spot. I went once when it was Tavern on Dean but it wasn't the same so I never went back. I checked out the menu of this new place and there was nothing to really draw me in there as of yet.

    YESSSSSSSS

Kelso beer is my hero (in beer form). In fact I personally thanked one half of the Kelso team in person last week.

  • BG-

The Mrs and I went to eat there Sat night and found the place to be completely packed.

As a result of just opening, they may have expected a slow period to work their bugs out, but they are not getting it.

There is a limited menu, and the crowd included everyone from young families to male sports fans.

....It seems far busier than I EVER saw Tavern on Dean (I've lived nearby since 2003)

Off topic: Have you ever been to the brewery? I heard they do tours? Have you (or anyone) ever been?
