Skiing for beginners withing easy reach of NYC?
My boyfriend and I like the idea of trying ski-ing for the first time. Neither of us have American driving licenses and, being English imports, are not very familiar with much outside Brooklyn and Manhattan. Is there anywhere that can be reached easily by public transport where we could have a beginners skiing weekend?
All relevant advice welcome!
Thanks

I'd say Hunter Mountain (http://www.huntermtn.com/) because it has a fair number of challenging slopes, but since you're absolute beginners, that opens up your options considerably. This site has a guide to local slopes you can get to without a car: http://offmanhattan.com/2007/12/13/mini-guide-to-skiing-snowboarding/

Just a few miles away from Hunter there iz a smaller mountain which tends to attract a family-oriented, less alcohol-fueled crowd. I would recommend it, Ski Windham, over Hunter, for new skiers.

There are a couple of tour companies that run day trips up to some of the closer mountains. There are several different places around the city that organize them and will help you with rental skis and lessons if you ask. You can search google under nyc ski day trips. I also found this http://www.bladesnyc.com/ and it looks like they have some frequently scheduled trips. Have fun. Ski fast and take chances.

I'd also suggest you look at the Poconos Mountains (on the Jersey PA border), either Jack Frost Mountain or Mountain Creek. You can take a bus from the Port Authority and the skiing is perfect for beginners with lots of local lodging options.

Stay away from Hunter. It gets packed with busloads of bad skiers. Catamount is great. A little far for a day trip, but doable and they have a good ski school. Have fun!

Also, Camelback in the Poconos has great beginner classes. My kids learned to ski there. You can take the Martz bus - http://www.martztrailways.com/ - and get there.
