  • looks like they do have eggs per brownstoner. let's hope they're just working out the kinks and will get their shit together.
  • I might try this tomorrow.
  • Great looking place and good latte. That's all I can state so far. Excited to try out menu.
  • I just tried one of their sandwiches -- it was great, w/ delicious crunchy ciabatta bread, tasty artisan mayo & fresh turkey slices. But it cost $9! Nice looking place though, and fun concept and name.
  • got counterculture coffee there today. not bad. $2 for a small-ish cup. hope this place lasts.
  • This place is pretty good, The food is fresh and very good, dining room is bright and some outdoor seating good for people watching and snacking. The price of my one slice of turkey(2mil thick) one slice of cheese sandwich was 9 dollars and was an excellent size for the food critical 7 year old. It was some version of an art sandwich, super tasty and super small. I saw that they had wine and beer and if I return I will ask if it's a nip size(6oz beer) before ordering. I have seen sushi bigger than my sandwich. portion control is cool when I'm doing it.
  • I like them. I had an iced coffee earlier and although I thought it could be a tad stronger, the counter-lady at least put the milk in for me and was very pleasant. The sandwiches didn't look all that healthy, but, I will blame that on a broken a/c (?). Now, if someone could come up with iced coffee that has the taste between Milk Bar's light and Joyce's strong, I will be a happy camper.
  • ^have you had the cold brewed ice coffee at sit & wonder? best in the neighborhood, imho.
  • ^^^>>>>>Never heard of it. Where's it at?
  • i agree with sweet tea. washington ave and... st. marks i think.
  • wash and st marks indeed. open 7 days.

at least when they first opened, they would either give you the cold-brewed or offer to make and ice an americano. definitely get the cold-brewed if there's a choice. (i think they now give it to you automatically if you ask for iced, but just to be sure.)

i wish everyone made cold-brewed. there's just no comparison.
  • i like sit & wonder's iced coffee, but i get really annoyed when they fill the cup just barely over half full (and that's with ice).

i stopped by milk bar twice last week - once for breakfast and once for iced coffee. sounds like the sandwiches are a little pricey, but i thought breakfast was a decent deal. it's not cheap, i guess, at twice what an egg-on-a-roll costs, but IMHO you get more, better stuff for the price. plus good coffee - both the capp i had at breakfast and the decaf iced were quite good.
  • Yah it's really not cheap.
I just got a regular ice coffee " not the australian kind " and a no frills blue berry muffin. Total came out to $6.80.

    Thats expensive even for Manhattan.
  • i treated, 3 pastries & 3 small coffees::: total = $18.75 !!!
  • From PHP:

Milk Bar, received its C because of 40 points worth of violations found during an inspection in October.

“We had a fruit fly problem, which is an automatic 28 points, because of a box of tomatoes that arrived,” said owner Alexander Hall.

He called an exterminator right away, but it was too late.

“It was a $2,000 fine, and the most farcical thing I’ve ever heard. The fruit flies came in on a product that I have no control over,” he said.

Hall called the C grade the “nail in the coffin,” and plans to sell Milk Bar. The grade, he said, is "not helping” sales.

  • NO! Alex can't sell Milk Bar!

  • NO! Alex can't sell Milk Bar!

  • Oh no! I live right across the street, and I have to say, it still looks like it's bustling. I hope Alex reconsiders. It's become such a wonderful part of the neighborhood. I'm never around the nabe long enough in the mornings for a nice breakfast anymore, so I haven't been in to Milk Bar for more than a coffee to go, but I'm going to try to make the time very soon to show solidarity. I love those poached eggs on country bread with gruyere and tomatoes. I really hope they stay.

  • I don't know the inner workings of the business but I'd be surprised based on what I see when I walk in MB that they're not doing well. This PHP piece really caught me off-guard. I got to MB 3 or 4 days a week.

They opened a sister cafe on Cortelyou right?

  • maybe he is selling it because it is doing well....

I.E. He built a business where there was none, and now that it has a loyal customer base, he is able to sell the business/lease for a profit.

...he can then take his profits and do it all again somewhere else, or open a larger place that will allow him a larger annual income.

  • I will be sad to see Milk Bar go. They have the best coffee in the neighborhood, in my opinion. On the other hand, the husband and I once tried to get breakfast there on a Saturday morning at 8:30--no go, not open until 9, not even a coffee. 9am is a fine opening time if you have the time to spend all morning having breakfast. We actually wanted time for a nice breakfast AND time to get stuff done before noon. It wasn't all bad, though, because instead of Milk Bar we went over to The Usual--nice place with nice people (coffee, however, not nearly as good.)

I was in Milk Bar once when the owner was clearly having staffing issues. I was also there once when the owner wasn't present. Let's just say, it's not welcoming to hear "We're closing in 15 minutes" as soon as you walk in the door.

This makes a lot more sense if it has stayed so busy.

  • My name is Alexander Hall. I am an owner of Milk Bar. We are not selling Milk Bar. I have been miss quoted. Yes we received a C grade for a fruit fly problem that was fixed with in one week. We were extremely disappointed to receive the C grade as we pride ourselves on the cleanliness of both our stores. The new grading system is solely set up to raise revenue for the city, not to protect consumers. I was saying that due to the new letter grading system, my partner and i will not be opening any more new cafes instead concentrating on our consultancy business and hopefully a bar early next year. Due mainly to a great loyal customer base both Milk Bar and Cafe Madeline are doing extremely well and we look forward to serving you for many years to come!!

  • good to hear that Alexander Hall.

I wondered why someone would sell over a mere bad grade from DOH.

....just think of those inspections as a tax raising effort, and you'll be annoyed and broke, yet fine.

[I'll believe the inspections are about health only if they can show that there is a lower rate of food borne illnesses as a result of the new system and fines.]

  • Good to hear. MB is a plus for the neighborhood.

Awesome. More good breakfasts in store.

  • Thanks for setting the record straight, Alex. I'm so relieved to hear that you are not going anywhere. Milk Bar has been such an amazing addition to Vanderbilt, may you have many more successful years here!
