the bomb shelter on Underhill — Brooklynian

the bomb shelter on Underhill

I've been depressed about this building for months now. Brownstoner sums it up nicely today:

"This bomb shelter of a building at 117 Underhill is an unfortunate step backward for a neighborhood with so much beautiful existing architecture and so much potential for its new buildings. What a bummer."

  • Aw, give 'em a chance...it's obviously unfinished. Maybe they'll slap on all kinds of pretty stuff - if nothing else you can look forward to reading "Fedders" in those sweet AC wells...

Here's a rare opportunity to invest in this well developed, 3 family, brick property before the "bidding" starts. Located in trendy Park Slope North (Prospect Heights), it features 4 BR units (12 total!!), 2 baths per unit, full basement, and new everything (appliances, wood floors, fresh walls, light fixtures, bath fixtures, windows, plumbing, electrical wiring, and 1 year guaranty). This property is still being worked, but is only months away from being complete. View this property, be assertive, and make it yours.

I always suspected you might have been on the short bus... :P  :P
  • I wonder who design all these ugly buildings. i think if i was on crack or lsd i would design better looking ones with half the mind.

Yeah, I think the same thing, but I've commented on it over at Brownstoner and gotten put in my place by a lot of architechts and soon-to-be's that tell me I'm completely wrong. I even got an email from someone claiming to be Scarano telling me I was an idiot for calling his work an eyesore.

My test is if it looks like something I designed it probably shouldn't be built.

just a bunch of cry baby pee pants some of those guys who defend it on brownstoner.
  • They are done by Hasidic Jewish Architects in Midwood. I worked 2 months with one of them. Basically there are 8 drawings for these places and they know exactly the minimum requirements to get throught the building department. The building department is only concerned with building code requirements and could care less about aesthetics. They build these buildings as cheap as possible

They probably fit all those bedrooms by keeping them at the minimal dimensions on 8'x10' and a nonexistent living space. They always put the tiniest windows possible based on $$$. I can't wait for the fake wood raised front door from Home Depot.

Hey, as bad as the design is, it did spark a conversation of shitty architecture if you can call it that.

You see an ugly building. I see an opportunity for our neighborhood graffiti artists. Calling all those with no respect for private property and the rule of law: deface this one creatively and brighten my day.

Reminds me of a particularly ugly construction that was going up in Windsor Terrace a while back. A couple days after the terrorist attacks somebody helpfully spray painted "BUSH - START HERE" on the front. Once that building was completed it wasn't so bad, though - not great, but not bad.
  • the building is still for sale on criags list :P. for that price they could get themsleves a nicer brownstone!!!
