  • Armchair has an arch enemy?

  • That's what it looked like. I once saw a post of his, can't remember what it was, but someone just jumped all over his ass, and it seemed rather personal.

I got the sense that he could have posted anything and this person would have still posted a nasty response. I also got the sense these two had sparred often here. I just got out out there.

Or children in bars during happy hour while eating the wrong kind of bagel.

    Or the food co-op.

    Or dog poop.

    Or eugenics.

....whew, those discussions never end well. I'm glad that hasn't happened.

  • Children in bars I can tolerate. But if they are incorrect on bagel choice... Simply intolerable.

  • The strollers.

Wait, isn't that considered mentioning it? And isn't my response just mentioning it yet again? Well played, DH.

As for children in bars, I'm fine with that if they don't mind me belting a few whiskeys and watching some televised sports in their sandbox.

What if the kids are fans of eugenics?

I think I would find it hard to tolerate a child OUTSIDE a bar, eating the RIGHT kind of bagel, that was a eugenics fan.

BTW, Eugenics has nothing to do the Eurythmics, even though they both start with E-u and end with the letters i-c-s.

Well as for shoveling, my neighbour has a snowblower and does a full wide path for the whole block. It is very nice. Something to consider perhaps...

I love this. I know some retired people will buy a snowblower and just use it as a service to the neighbors. The fringe benefits are goodwill, neighbor interactions, and home cooked meals.

Yeah. Exactly. He always sweeps the sidewalk too when it is snow free and he gets all kinds of food, baked goods, drinks and other consumables. We love him.

  • Ron Burgundy: Boy, that escalated quickly... I mean, that really got out of hand fast.

Champ Kind: It jumped up a notch.

Ron Burgundy: It did, didn't it?

piano and i already hugged it out. don't worry y'all. for the record, my thing to be really annoyed about right now is that people who would normally scoop their dog's poop seemed to think that poop clean-up was suspended in the snow along with alternate side parking. it's like a mine field out there.

  • Is the dog poop situation really any worse? Or is dog poop just more Obvious in the snow? I can't think of one logical reason why dog owners would suddenly get more lax because of snow. And it irks me to see fresh pee and poop in front of my door because it is so stark against the pristine white snow backdrop. Again, no evidence of a worsening situation because of snow.

  • it's far worse on my block in the snow. not even a question. during normal times it is very rare that i will see any. now it's a dozen piles for every few house fronts. but i'm hoping that the rain has made all that go away.

  • Just when I've seen everything on the internet, winstonsmith posts a link to "Poop Slope". Thank you, I think I will be laughing to myself about that all day!

  • The dumb commie hippie food co-op d-bags who walk side-by-side on the sidewalk with the food cart who think they own it are far worse!

Nope. But you are worse than them all.

well, leave out the bit about dumb hippie food co-op d-bags and i can agree with the general sentiment. really, anybody who is taking up the entire sidewalk - whether they be hippie, communist, donkey, angel, jogger or whatever - is not playing nice.

  • I don't know Aqua. I believe the general sentiment of that post was that he has serious issues with approximately 14,000 people for the sole reason that they are members of the Park Slope Food Coop (though most don't even live in the Slope). As though everyone else in this city walks in a single file. He's not saying all people who block the sidewalk are bad. He's saying these 14,000 people are worse than the other 8 million people here.

But judging from that post, there likely are even larger groups of people this kid has emotional problems with.

  • Hey all,

I just moved to Park Slope and this board was recommended to me as good resource for what's what's and general goings on 'round the hood and such.

Wondering: Do all the threads on this board so suddenly degenerate into an off topic passive aggressive pissing match, or it is just this one?

  • Some do; most don't.

Piano's reference to another poster's "emotional problems" may actually cross the line into a violation of site rules. If he or anyone else continues in that vein the thread will be closed.

  • Is that a threat or a promise?

  • Depends on one's point of view, right?

  • Kid??? I'm probably older than you?

Yes, I do have emotion problems. 45 years living in this shit hole of a city cracked me bad!

  • Yes, "Dance"

Most do, just like here. Even the 'mommy' messages boards degenerate. It's just human nature ONLINE I guess.

  • I guess I'm a little disappointed to hear someone say "yes, most threads degenerate into passive-aggressive bickering" when that's clearly not the case, and even if it was, it's not like we are helpless to do anything about it! Lately, when threads get off topic, I'll post a note that people are free to continue posting off topic arguments as long as they don't mind me deleting them; and if a thread runs it's course, I'll sometimes just lock the thread.

  • I tend to be of Booklaw's perspective:

booklaw wrote: Some do; most don't.

...but I think we should also recognize a few other factors:

    a. readers have different tolerances for bickering.

    b. readers have different definitions of what constitutes "civil discourse" vs "bickering".

    c. I also think people who tend to avoid conflict in life, have a difficult time watching others hash it out on the internet, no matter how "civil" the discourse.

I disagree. Those who avoid conflict in life are the exact people who hash it out on the internet

  • I think its a little of both:

    1. There are clearly those who relish acting like a jerk on the internet, who would never do it in person. ....the anonymity gives them a shield to hide behind, and they believe there are no consequences.

    2. There are those who love debates in person and on line; they tend to be civil in both contexts. (the obvious exception is the guy at every bar who is missing teeth because he does not know how to act in person either. He is special).

  • There is a third category: those of us (I include myself) who dislike conflict entirely, whether in person or on line.

  • For Booklaw-

The weather is warming up outside. I hope the last of the snow melts this week
