Schools should get some common sense, and also install zero stupidity — Brooklynian

Schools should get some common sense, and also install zero stupidity

tolerance for administrates. Kid gets suspended for having red highlights in her hair. What ever happen to just no to weapons, drugs and, maybe gang colors/racist propaganda?

A spicy new hairstyle got a 12-year-old Texas girl a lot of attention, but not all of it was good.

"They were cool," said Stephanie Plato, who got red highlights for her birthday. "They make my hair look better and makes it look cute."

Turns out the red highlights were in violation of the school's dress code and school officials suspended her.

  • What's new? That was happening when I was in high school.

  • I was always annoyed when they made the "almost naked" female students wear more.

  • Where did you guys go to school? Cause I remember JP coming to school in 8th grade with his shoulder length blonde hair dyed purple and green to match his tie and blazer and not one teacher even blinked.

  • they didn't mess with the people with colored hair at my school.

...only the semi naked female students who wanted to be Madonna ('83 - '87)

Students wearing their bras on the outside of their clothing really drove the teachers nuts.

looking at them sure beat looking at the teacher.

  • CHANNELVIEW, TX... Need I say more?

  • I lived in a school district with 2 public high schools. Mine allowed "unnatural" colored hair -- the other did not. My hair was pink, purple, red - you name it.

A friend of mine at the other high school dyed his hair blue. He got suspended. I went to the hearing and spoke about how ridiculous it is to punish someone when 1/2 of the school board was doing the same thing -- no offense, lady, but at 60 years old no one is buying your "natural" blond highlights on your brown hair.

So I spoke, with Elmo-red hair about my high grades, my Girl Scout Gold Award, my community service, etc. and how allowing someone to be pre-judged wasn't what public schools should be about. They claimed that it was a "distraction" to the other kids - but I said showing up with ANY new hair style would be distracting on day one (kids commenting, noticing, etc. - doesn't make it wrong) - but that then kids would move past it. If you're sitting in science class and after 2 weeks you still can't learn because a boy in the other row has green hair, then you are the one with the problem. Unless it was a uniform school you can't get past distractions, so get over it. It's not inappropriate. They agreed and both changed their rules and apologized to my friend.

But yeah - this is nothing new at all.

  • Also, while I agree that it's a stupid policy, there are a LOT of PUBLIC schools in Brooklyn that mandate uniforms. My students wear button-up shirts, ties, and cardigans. Or pleated jumpers and blouses. And it's mandatory for them to wear them (no sneakers either!) or they cannot attend after-school activities, tutoring sessions, assemblies, trips, etc.

    excellence

  • in my high school none of the teachers said a thing about the russian girls and see through shirts :o. lol all the guys were happy :D.
