strike one for pro-ho patch? they still have the article up with the alleged misquote. seems like they should address alex's comment: defend, retract or allow their nascent credibility to slowly erode.

Somewhat off topic, but the number of bulletproof Chinese restaurants with A grades seems like further evidence that the grading system is useless. Or maybe I'm presupposing too much here.

Or maybe I'm presupposing too much here.Based on the number of chain restaurants with A grades, I think the system is set up so that the less you actually cook in your restaurant, the better you will score. Still, am I going to a sushi place with a "B"? I am not. Restaurants can apply for re-inspection if they score a "C" or below--I suspect that the bulletproof places got "C"s, did what they needed to do (and should be doing all along) to increase their score, and then got a re-inspection. I'm sure the restaurant has never been so clean before--or since--the re-inspection.

Really? No one is going to challenge any of this story? Just praise and more praise for the poor, victimized Milk Bar?
1. I know there have been some claims that the PHP article "mis-quoted" the Milk Bar owner, but in that article he claims that fruit flies are an automatic 28 violation points. However, comparing this to another restaurant (Sarge's) that had the exact same violation of fruit flies, their total violation points were only at 20 vs. Milk Bar at 40. The truth is that a) the claim about an automatic 28 points is clearly not true and b) Even if that claim WAS true, they had other violation points.
2. The fact that you all are so amazed that Chinese food places can get A's should tell you that looks can be deceiving - your hipster haven obviously is dirtier than a hole-in-the-wall Chinese place, but somehow that's the city's fault at starting these inspections and not Milk Bar's?
3. To WhyNot_31, I suggest you read up on the results of LA's implementation of the health score cards for restaurants where researchers found a 20% decline in hospitalization due to food-borne illness. null
4) Why shouldn't the public have the right to know how sanitary a restaurant is? Prior to this it was basically either the restaurant was so bad that it was shut down or it was allowed to stay open - perhaps with many health violations. True, those violations probably come with fines, but now restaurants are publically shamed into improving.
It's disappointing that the Milk Bar owner didn't own up to the issue and instead blamed the system for somehow singling him out, even though the majority of other dining establishments in the neighborhood got a B or higher. Just because you like a certain business doesn't mean they are angels or following health codes whatsoever. Also - if this initiative raises more tax revenue for the city by cracking down on health violations that shouldn't be happening in the first place? Good! Now we just need more police to arrest all the morons who turn left onto St. Marks Ave from Flatbush!

i personally don't have any problem with most of what you said. in my view, the grading system will be more useful over time, because then you should be able to see the restaurants that continually have issues vs. those that don't.
but i don't see where milk bar was saying they were singled out. he seemed to be saying that the system was far from perfect. it always seems clean enough, but it clearly has some challenges. it has a tiny kitchen and basically no storage, which has got to be more difficult to keep clean and compliant than the giant full professional kitchen at, say, joyce. but C or otherwise, milk bar kicks butt when it comes to coffee of any kind, so i am happy they are not closing!

oh, and ditto on the morons who turn left onto st. marks. an even easier ticket would be the stop sign at carlton and prospect, which is my personal pet peeve.
Howdy, Stranger!
