Cars in bike lane — Brooklynian

Cars in bike lane

Saw something today that I couldn't quite believe, nor could the other pedestrians in the vicinity. At the light 14th St & PPW, an SUV (naturally!) pulled from the left lane, went through the place where pedestrians stand waiting to cross the street, went into the bike lane, and drove down it to the circle, at which point he (or she, couldn't see in the vehicle) barrelled into the roundabout in front of the cars that were waiting at the light. The SUV was moving pretty fast and if anyone on a bike had turned into the bike lane from the circle, I don't know what would have happened.

Was kind of startling to see. Anyone else seen something like this?

  • How does one event negate the findings of a study?

  • I don't know, how?

  • I bet dollars to donuts it was an unmarked police car or one of the shomrim vehicles.

  • or a off-duty officer.

  • I saw it, I think it was Marty driving :)

But seriously, there have been confused drivers that accidentally turn in the bike lanes. The bike lanes can look like cute little roads under some circumstances. I remember a report last year of someone driving up the Hudson River bike path. This is why permanent barriers are important, to prevent what could be horrific accidents.

  • Let's just hope it was a mistake and an anomaly. If they were just confused, then it must have meant there were no bikes in the lane at the time, otherwise that would have tipped the driver off. If it was someone looking to kill cyclists, then we're in trouble.

But I seriously doubt it was a cop of any kind. Sure they can do some not-too-bright things, but they'd have no need or reason to do that when they can speed down any road they want whenever they want.
