Confused church bells on Pacific between Vanderbilt and Underhill

Anyone else noticed that the bells chime like 37 or 48 o'clock every day at five til noon? I sort of like it now, but wondered if anyone knew why.

  • Could just be calling the faithful to midday services. Catholic churches have historically had an eighteen bell peal at 6 a.m., noon and 6 p.m. for The Angelus, but I would think that the random ding donging I heard at around 11.55 this morning was some newbie bell ringer who has no idea what s/he is doing. I was in the Stroud playground and couldn't quite tell which direction the bells were coming from. My husband thought they were coming from St Teresa's Church, but I couldn't see the bell moving in the tower (and I looked). St Teresa's has Mass at 11 a.m. and 12.30 p.m. on Sunday, so it could have been ringing for the end of Mass, although that is not a tradition I am familiar with.

  • Yep, definitely! I live right next to that church and they chime the bells at seemingly random times every Sunday. No idea why though.

  • I live on the block with Teresa's and have never heard their bells once, come to think of it.

  • They do it during the week, too. We actually have a lot of fun counting the number of times they ring, sometimes for the hour, sometimes for, say 10:17 am.
