Sad Hipster is sad — Brooklynian

Sad Hipster is sad

I would have posted this in Williamsburg, but Crown Heights was closer

You are not to blame, but I think I saw him on Franklin Ave recently.

  • Sweet merciful crap, is he wearing jeggins? I thought jeggins was just an urban legend.

  • No Piano he has full on leggings. Either that or he's wearing lycra running tights, both of which are just wrong, especially if your bench press is less than three digits.

  • As a public service, I added the video so people would know what jeggings look like.

    ...and why they are wrong.

  • Now that I've seen the video and know what jeggings are, I can tell you that I saw a young lady wearing jeggings while jogging around Prospect Park a couple months ago. I did not laugh and point, I did not mock, I did not scowl in disgust. No, I admired. She was very, very attractive hot.

  • I will concede that jeggings have a limited time and place.

However, I continue to believe that jeggings are often misused.

Just because something is legal does not make it right.

  • there are 2 types of jeggings. One type is leggings painted to look like jeans. Those are bad. THe other type is jeans that are tight and stretchy to look like leggings. Those are good. The fabric should be thick like jeans, have pockets, stitching, etc. like jeans - but pullon (no fly) like leggings. The other kind is a hot mess that does not look good on 99.9% of the people who put them on. But either way, those are not jeggings. They are simply blue stretch pants/leggings - something never to be worn as pants.

  • xlizellx, I agree.

Can we ALL agree that Sad is Hipster is Sad, partly due to wearing leggings as pants?

Granted, some may point out that there may be many reasons for his sadness, but this piece of clothing seems like as good of a place to start the analysis as any.

Whyfi, when you are finished thinking about the young woman in the park, please rejoin the conversation.

    Nope. Need some more time.

  • So I showed my family the photo and they asked how many toll takers or McDonalds drive thru window operators could afford to pay $200 for one arm and a scarf. Sad hipster is sad because even though there is a sucker born every minute, the recession is driving down his profits.

  • homeowner-

Your family believes that less people are buying ironic art than before?

I don't think I can agree with this. I'd say he's more pensive. Perhaps sad in the pathetic sense, yes. But I don't know he's sad as in blue or unhappy. Being hipster cool and aloof requires the emotional ends of the spectrum to be tempered.

I wouldn't be surprised if this is how the guy looks when he wins the lottery, or back stage passes to Jimmy Eat World.

  • Piano,

I will concede to you as well; You have a point.

I will admit to especially liking the part of this definition of pathetic that deals with contemptuous pity.

Re: Jimmy Eat World, the author of the link I reference in the OP suggests the Sad Hipster may be a fan of the Decemberists.

Perhaps out of a bias that comes from the name "Sad Hipster", I continue to perceive him as more sad than pensive.

  • I was only slightly ahead of the curve on Sad Hipster, and he had already become something of an internet sensation:

    He deserves no less.

...however, so far we DO get credit for being unified against 99% of jeggings! I am very proud of everyone that has posted on this thread so far.
