New Thai Place on Franklin between Park and Prospect

I got a menu under my door today. Does this mean they're open?
-
What's the name of the place? Anything interesting on the menu? Pricing?
-
I just went by and they open tomorrow - Wed 9 March. I picked up a menu as well. Lunch specials from 12 to 3 from 6-8 dollars. The decor looks sweet - nice tile job on the wall and many small tables. I hope the food is good and wish them well.
-
Whyfi- this place is called Sweet Basil. It is located at Franklin and Park.
It doesn't seem to have a website, but I'm sure Yelp will get its menu on line soon.

I'm so there! I like my Thai food seasoned! Let's see!
I like moderately priced, quality food! Fingers crossed because I still head to Nana on 5th Ave.in my old nabe for decent Thai!
-
I got green curry with veggies and tofu for lunch yesterday. Asked for it spicy, and it was rightfully, nose-runningly hot. Huzzah! And just $6.50 for the lunch special. It was tasty times. Great addition to the area.
-
I stopped in out of curiousity and picked up an order of fried tofu and vegetarian spring rolls. The place is nice - I wish the curtains were thick and covered the windows - the inside is darkish and nice for a sitdown place, but the huge glass windows seems to cheapen it. The food was good - $7 for two apps. It wasn't anything extraordinary, but good food.
-
I ordered delivery last night. It was a nice tasty alternative, but I still like Udom Thai more. Still, I plan to call again or stop by.
-
I really wanted to like this place since there is limited Thai in the area BUT we got take out last night and my food was disgusting. I took three bites and threw it out. Our food arrived 10 minutes after we placed the order which made me think that not too much care really was put into making our food very appetizing. I will never order from them again.

haha ouch. what did you get?

I have eaten 5 things so far. All are ok but nothing spicy or savory as the recipes are described. The Pad Thai, Massiman, Ginger Joy were all good but special or very hot spicy or temp. The tofu appetizer is good, The spicy calamari is just not spicy. I will keep trying but...
-
I actually really like the place. I've gone three times and the quality of the food was very good.., but the dishes are not very spicy.
I personally like low sodium - minimally spiced food.., but I was a bit surprised at their minimal spice.
Perhaps, it they were made aware of these opinions, they could spice up their dishes. I'm not really sure what to make of this.
As much as I like their food, I would like to taste a little more "authentic" Thai spice and/or flavor.

I was surprised how quickly Thai delivery usually was until I took a Thai cooking class. It takes a lot longer for the food to cool off enough to eat than it does to cook it. You toss first set of ingredients in, saute a minute or less then add next ingredients and cooke another minute or two. Possibly one more group of ingredients, depending on what the dish is, then done. Given the right ingredients, a delicious meal can come from a restaurant kitchen in 5 minutes or less.
That area needs more food options, so hopefully this place works out any kinks.

Not to brag, but I took a cooking class IN Thailand. It's not really spicy food. Of course it can be (just add peppers!) but they made a point of telling us that it was a fallacy that good Thai food was spicy. Thai food is fresh with vibrant flavors!
-
My class was also in Thailand! We got to ride bikes around a farm, but my bike had no working breaks
Cost about $25 for a full day as opposed to hundreds here.I was in northern Thailand and we got to make ours pretty spicy and ate many authentic meals that were VERY spicy (we're not even sure we were at restaurants for some of these, maybe someone decided to make 50 cents off of some tourists who could say the name of a dish and a meat in Thai). The spice wasn't the kind that lingers, but it hits hard and then passes after you sweat a bit. It was all very flavorful, regardless of how hot it was. I spent weeks eating wonderful meals.
Our teacher emphasized that different areas of Thailand have very different foods or versions of the same dish, like curry. When we traveled to the far south, we definitely experienced a big change in the food, including less spicy.

I like my thai food spicy.
I look for the menu items with the little peppers next to them.
-
We learned in the class we took that, at least in Thailand (need to try it here), if you ask for Thai spicy, you get a wonderfully spicy dish.
Now I want Thai food. Does anyone know of anywhere that sells *fresh* curry paste, other than the Bangkok Market near Mott St? They are out for a while.

Ha ha ha - at a Thai restaurant in MN, they had a little 'star' heat index, and you could tell them how hot you wanted it, from 1 to 5. The first time I placed an order, they ol' guy asked me, "how hot?"
"5."
The ol' guy, holding up five fingers, "Are you sure?!"
"Yeah."
"Okay..." shaking his head, as he walked back to the kitchen. It was blazing.
...but it was gooood.

Delicious. My girlfriend and I went on Friday night. We ordered a Mango Shrimp and duck. For dessert; tempura cheese cake. It all came up to $39. They took their time to prepare, but it was ok; we were enjoying the night.

Personally, I'm not interested in Where the chef acquired their cooking skills IF the knowledge can be applied correctly, and unfortunately for Sweet Basil the dishes I sampled flavors lacked Vibrancy & Spice..
Perhaps, this will all change soon. I liked the quality of the food and the employees try very hard to make the rest of the experience pleasant.

I got a menu on my doorstep yesterday, on Midwood Street, in PLG. I hope that means that this place delivers here now. The map on their menu shows Eastern Parkway as the southern boundary of their delivery area.

Ok so I tried the green curry. I always try it because it is standard and provides a good comparative measure for other Thai rests. The quantity provided was enormous -really for a 1 person dish. Given the comments above I requested "extra spicy" and it was spicy (not extra but enough). I think they need to use more coconut milk and fresh veggies - I received alot of tired/over-sauteed looking green beans in the green curry and there were really no other veggies. This was disappointing. SO HEY SWEET BASIL KNOW THAT THE RESIDENTS OF CROWNHEIGHTS NORTH - NEW AND OLD _ DO KNOW REAL THAI FOOD AND WHEN ORDERING THAI WE EXPECT BETTER THAN A HOLE IN THE WALL CHINESE JOINT. I HAVE GONE TO THAILAND A NUMBER OF TIMES, MY HUSBAND AS WELL (WHO LIVED THERE) AS WELL AS A NUMBER OF PEOPLE WHO POSTED ABOVE, AND YOU REALLY NEED TO OFFER THE BEST QUALITY POSSIBLE IN ORDER TO RETAIN CUSTOMERS. OTHERWISE WE WILL GO ELSEWHERE. SO NO MORE TIRED VEGGIES PLEASE AND MAKE THE FOOD SPICY. THIS IS AFTER ALL A SOMEWHAT ETHNIC NEIGHBORHOOD AND PEOPLE HERE ARE USED TO SPICE/FLAVOUR. AN EXPECT IT .THIS IS NOT OUTTER NEW JERSEY WHERE YOU SERVE BLAND THAI AND PEOPLE ARE FINE WITH THAT. I AM GIVING YOU FEEDBACK AND HOPE THAT YOU WILL MAKE ADJUSTMENTS AS PER MY AND OTHER POSTS. THANK YOU.

All caps - really? Do you think anyone reads that?

I'd encourage the early reviewers who weren't impressed to give Sweet Basil another try. I went last night and it was excellent. My wife, who has also taken cooking classes in Thailand, thought it was easily the best Thai food in the PH/CH area. Also, it's worth noting Sweet Basil is now by far the nicest sit down restaurant on Franklin. They did an awesome job on the renovation and the atmosphere is cozy and inviting. A needed addition to the avenue. We'll definitely be going back.
-
ate there yesterday..asked for red curry..we don't have any. They do but they call it Panang. It is good and again not spicy at all even after asking for it to be prepared "face red, eye watering spicy"..still non committed . The string beans with red ginger chili thing was also excellent.
-
We can completely second grantsquare's comments. The restaurant is lovely inside, the service is prompt and attentive, and the food is legitimately good! The tom yum and steamed veg dumplings were great. We had panang curry which was also very nice, although they failed to make it spicy as we had asked (as someone else posted above), so we plan to really work on convincing them next time. The green tea is a very nice genmaicha which is refilled constantly.
The only disappointment was the avocado salad, which was literally just sliced avocado on top of iceberg lettuce with a side of ginger dressing, with two grape tomatoes thrown in to add some color. And the shrimp tom yum was a little short on shrimp, with only two making an appearance where three is customary. But we will definitely be back!

I have eaten here 3 times. I will definitely go back for more and based on what I have seen this is a great addition to the hood. I do know however that I need to try more stuff on the menu. For the record, I dont like Udom Thai (ate there 3 times blecch), hate the pitiful excuse for Thai or Japanese on Franklin shudder to remember the name, absolutely love Lemongrass Thai on 7th Ave and my favorite local Thai restaurant is Fulton Thai. For the record Fulton Thai is on the PH/Clinton Hill border but delivers here into Crown Heights.
Back to Sweet Basil:
First time ordered: springrolls, lemon grass porkchops, and coconut mango dessert.
Second time ordered: springrolls and the thai house fried rice with shrimp.
Third time ordered: avocado salad and lemon grass pork chops. The spring rolls are light and non greasy. The lemon grass porkchops are delicious which is why I keep ordering them. The only disappointment is the vegetables served with them that seemed to be steamed but tasteless.
I thought the avocado salad was perfect. A simple salad with thinly sliced avocado placed on top of a bed of iceberg and maybe a few spinach or mesclun leaves. The dressing is a tart and tasty dressing made from citrus with a hint of sesame oil. Simple but yummy.
The Thai fried rice was a disappointment and was particularly bland. Will give it another try at some point with the pineapple fried rice and hope they dont mess up.
The coconut rice dessert was pretty good. The mango was lovely but generally I wasnt feeling the rice though it was very coconut-y and sweet. Maybe another time cause I know sometimes Asian desserts are hit or miss for me.
On the whole, I wish they had more pork dishes and fish dishes on the menu since I dont eat beef or chicken that much. (Since when is salmon teriyaki Thai food?). Anyway, I will still keep it in rotation between Sweet Basil and Fulton Thai.
-
The dressing on the avocado salad I had was your absolutely standard ginger dressing ubiquitous in Japanese restaurants on the basic iceberg lettuce appetizer salads.
We ordered from here a second time. Food was great again, we skipped the avocado salad this time and I went for the basil string bean beef. This is a very nice dish with the sauteed string beans being just the right level of crunchy, plenty of basil and tending closer to the level of spice I wanted (I asked for "very spicy" and it was moderately so).
Still only two shrimp in the tom yum though. Could use more vegetables, too. But I'm fussy about my tom yum after having been spoiled a few other places...
-
I ordered some food yesterday, pineapple curry, pad thai, papaya salad and glass noodles. It was good without being spectacular. I will definitely order from them again and will try the sit down one of these days.
I vote to keep them.
Howdy, Stranger!
