Pamoja House — Brooklynian

Pamoja House

Hey all,

Anyone have any insight on this place? Its in the old armory bet. Marcus Garvey and Lewis on Putnam being used as a 200-bed capacity homeless shelter. Considering moving nearby and wanted to test the waters here. Already walked around and spoken to several residents, many who say they've been there for decades, and they've never had a problem. A little digging revealed some pretty strict rules and regulations for its residents, including the necessity of being employed to live there, enforced curfews, etc. And the folks I've talked to from the immediate area said that security patrols the outside and inside of the building periodically all day and night, which is all good.

However, what worries me is the the numerous attempts by the City to take over and expand it greatly. Every effort has so far been pushed back local politicians and community board, but still, the idea of that makes me nervous.

But again, a little further insight might be nice. Thanks.

  • Okay, I'm going to go with "no news = good news".

  • No direct experience with this place, but I've been pretty impressed with the diligence of the DHS police in having residents not hang out and be a nuisances around their shelters.

    Franklin and Atlantic, for example
