BUTCHER-CROWN HEIGHTS

Can anyone recommend a good butcher (for pork ribs) in or around the hood? Thanks!!

  • Your best bet is probably Western Beef down on Empire and Washington.

  • There's a butcher I window shopped at next to David's Brisket House, between Herkimer St. & Atlantic Avenue on Nostrand Avenue. They would have it. I think the owner/s are from the South. And we all know about how the pork rib thing goes down south.

  • What cut are you looking for? The Associated has some good looking baby back ribs that are "name brand", meaning not from the associated butcher. I plan to bbq some of those as the weather gets better. I would LOVE to know where I can buy St. Louis cut.

  • I was either looking for a rack of ribs "pre-st. louis cut" or even cut into spare ribs already. i think ima hit up that butcher on nostrand near the brisket house..they've been around for a while. thanks yall!!

  • Western Beef? Their meat section is enormous and LOOKS like it could be good, but whatever packaged meat I've bought there has been really awful. I once had their butcher custom cut lamb for stew. That was excellent, but it was raining when I bought it and the roof was leaking onto the counter where the butcher worked--disgusting!!

Western Beef is a large store and COULD be really good, but only if their management cared about customers, something for which I've seen no evidence. It's sad; they could be the best supermarket in the area if they only tried.

  • Anyone checked out the North Carolina Country Store? It is on Fulton Street between Brooklyn/Kingston/Throop now. I remembered it further east, and on Atlantic, or is that not the same one?

  • I'd probably go to Costco before Western Beef. They're a lot cleaner and they have a see-thru butcher shop. Where I believe you can get a custom cut of any meat they have in stock. is good for bulk hot dogs and so on. WB is way too dirty and expensive for their station. This is of course if the butcher shop on Nostrand by Herkimer doesn't work out.

Maybe North Carolina is franchising? I remember the store on Atlantic as well. They also owned the restaurant on Saratoga and Atlantic. But I believe it changed ownership a while ago. It's still good for lunch and dinner though.

  • Recommends about a place of healthy food, green tea and vegetarian wraps in or around the hood? Thanks!!
