Nagging neighbors in Park Slope

prime 6 is a restaurant/bar/lounge expected to open in May. There is a small group of neighbors who live on St. Marks Avenue, about 12, that consists mainly of lawyers and writers, whose main goal is to shut down this venue before it has opened. The owner ws willing to negotiate terms to include on his SLA license at a meeting held this week, but the lawyer representing this group will not agree to any stipulations. Would you believe they even argued about what side his garbage should be put out on? The lawyer said he didnt want the noise of the garbage trucks waking up his family at 5am. The neighbors are being unfare and unreasonable for this owner and refuse to give him a chance to work within the community.

If you live or work around the vicinity of Prime 6 and support this venue or wish to give the owner a chance to operate before passing judgement, please come to the next Community Board 6 meeting on March 28th at 6;30PM. Let's not let these NIMBY's dominate our neighborhood. They dont represent the entire Park Slope and other people have oppinions too.

  • Hi - you didn't say exactly *where* your restaurant/lounge/bar is trying to open on St Marks, and what some of the issues are. What kind of terms get attached to a liquor license?

You might want to look back at the comments on this board around Union Hall when they opened. In fact, it was a huge drag for the neighbors of that place - where a kitchen cabinet shop had been, loud late music, frat boys, and barf on the sidewalk appeared -- none of which (apparently) the owners admitted to when they were introducing themselves to the block and getting a liquor license.

I'm sure those upset neighbors you're mad at know that once a place has a liquor license, there's not much they can do except get into a protracted pissing contest, calling the cops on noise complaints and whatever.

  • lol, looks like the owner of this new place is lawyer too...

(ps I know nothing about any of this - I found the original post confusing so I looked it up. I was at a local music venue last night and nobody was acting like a jackass outside, so I know it's possible...)

there's more...and now I see probably I am the last person in Park Slope to hear of this place...

  • Pitu-

As per the Brooklyn Paper article you cite, this is what the neighbors are up to as of 3/22/11:

brookylnpaper wrote: Community Board 6 now wants to reopen the debate, voting last week to ask the state for a new license hearing on the grounds that the board failed to provide locals with enough advance warning about the lone hearing.
  • Business seems like a bad fit for the neighborhood.

  • This is the place we talked about last June, right?

It's looking to open in the old Royal Video on the Slope side of Flatbush where 6th Ave and St. Marks meet.

Since it was formerly a video store they have to go through the whole zoning and liquor and/or caberet license process, and here we are.

Unfortunately the original filing with the DOB would of asked for the zoning/CofO change if necessary and it would of been addressed early on. The DOB unlike the SLA has no political agenda when changing use groups other then code considerations. I believe the liquor license can be challenged on renewal (2 years?) if the neighbors keep good records and call the cops frequently. I suspect they already know this.

  • A bar/nightclub/lounge with bottle service?

No wonder your neighbors are in opposition. Union Hall pissed off a lot of people when they opened, and they're nowhere near at that level. UH also took measures to tone things down (closing earlier on weeknights, keeping people from smoking/being loud out front, etc)

If you open as planned, I'm predicting a storm of noise complaints, calls to the police, and irate neighbors.
