Good thrift and second hand stores?

i know all about the local thrift.
for clothing you might want to try beacon's closet; there's one here, on 5th, or in williamsburg. prices are pretty good, actually. but never as cheap as.....
my favorite place, the salvation army.
the best one (i think)--in clinton hill, on quincy off classen. it's amazing, and they have furniture.
the one on atlantic ave is pretty good as well, but don't think they have furniture. the one on flatbush, eh.
as for furniture, before i went anywhere i'd go trolling the streets of park slope on one of the "large" trash nights. i've found some amazing stuff.(and great clothes, actually. i'm up to 3 cashmere sweaters and counting, all in my neighborhood.) -
the salvation army on atlantic does have some furniture, but not much. ON THE OTHER HAND, atlantic (west of flatbush) is awash in used furniture. some stores are cheaper than others, but i've certainly seen some beautiful pieces at what i think are very reasonable prices.
but frankly, everything in my house is from ikea, flea markets, and the curb. nothing like a city of teensy apartments for great garbage picking! most recent find: 4-drawer antique oak filing cabinet. a little refinishing work later, it looks like the ones that go for $900+. plus the cats can play at being tall. -

and i was in carroll gardens the other night, and if i'd needed anything it was rife with great goodies: a coupe of fab coffee tables, a vintage metal office desk, chairs. the only piece of furniture i have bought retail is my sofa (and it took me 9 years to find it). everything else, salvation army, other thrift, street, stoop/estate sales, ebay, trash!

We got a great antique Singer sewing machine/desk from the SA on Atlantic. $45 bucks! Still need help getting it fully operational though...

Subject: thrift stores
I love combing the stoop sales on the weekend in PS, however, I
work in Manhattan near a Housing Works Thrift Store (E.77th st). I
think I am in there nearly every day and basically my entire apt, and
my entire wardrobe comes from there. If you purchase something they
can recommend "man with van" type delivery options that cost around
$50.00. Well worth it for the items I have gotten there. My most recent
score were two Mitchell Gold leather club chairs and an ottomon that cost
$1600 each in Pottery Barn, ottoman around $600.00. I paid 300.00ea.
& 130 for the ottomon. I also got a Ekones reclining chair for $150.00
that is just amazingly comfortable. I could go on and on but Housing
Works should not be missed. The one on 17th Street has just been
renovated and it is fabulous. -
