Mocha Lounge Mondays - Lesbian night in the nabe

Hi all,

I found myself at the Chocolate Monkey last night with a friend (singing karaoke - it's actually a very fun time and I encourage you all to attend). the bartender, Sheba, gave me a card for Mocha Lounge Mondays which is a Lesbian party at the Chocolate Monkey on Monday nights. it's free, they have a kitchen, and apparently they have $4 drink specials for the event.

so, all you ladies who dig ladies may want to give this a shot. if you're too chicken to go alone, I'll come along. did you guys know that joint has a pool table?

  • As an aside, Chocolate Monkey is owned by the same person who owns the dreaded Muddy Waters:

  • So is Mule on 4th Ave a lesbian scene, or what?

On a completely different track, here's a bit from a New York Times article that included what the Muddy Waters owner had to say about Amy Watkins, the social worker who was killed back in 1999 on Park Place:
Inside Muddy Waters, a coffee shop on Vanderbilt Avenue that opened about three years ago, the owner, Ntozake Lundy, 27, said Ms. Watkins often stopped by for coffee. Unlike most people interviewed, Ms. Lundy said the slaying did not surprise her....

Ms. Lundy said that the recent gentrification has improved Prospect Heights, and that it has also helped her business, but she said that newcomers are oblivious to what she called obvious warning signs of trouble. She said that as prime blocks of Sterling Place and Park Place have become fully occupied, the boundaries of the neighborhood have expanded into more marginal blocks.

''They're young, and they don't intend to have roots here, so that makes a difference,'' Ms. Lundy said of the new arrivals. ''They just don't want to know. They just want to get in their apartment.''
Not a whole lotta sympathy going on there.
  • really? a pool table AND lesbians? go know

alfairnadia, what was the crowd like? i'd be interested in checking it out, especially if it is different from our usual brooklyn dyke scene, which tends to be a bit too young and/or too....errrr....(i don't wanna make enemies), for me. are you serious about chaperoning?

btw, what does the kitchen turn out?

well, I was there on sunday night, which is karaoke night. monday night is lesbian night. I'm guessing the crowd is pretty cool, as the folks at karaoke night were very fun. the kitchen is probably mostly fried stuff - the cook wanted me to get chicken fingers. but I was all full of chocolate martinis. :)

I'd be happy to chaperone. :)
  • Hooray for lesbians!

I wonder if it's one of those things that starts really late. I'm no good after 9pm on school nights. One of you young'uns best go and report back!
  • yo, i ain't no young'n, either!!!

and share concerns about late school nights. when i've walked my dog by there at 8-9 during the week, it seems that people are already convening, so maybe this is a good sign.

i'd be game to check it out on that earlier side. as long as no one pressured me into chocolate booze and fried chicken concomitantly. talk about recipes for disaster!!!

well, I probably wouldn't be able to make it til around 10ish (pilates night) but I'm being good on the booze front so no pressure from me. :)

I expect to be there between 8 and 10. I look just like my avatar.

consider wearing some knit gauchos or culottes with that outfit  even better, maybe we should ALL show up in such a costume, with top-'o-thong bringing up the rear, sts. only prob is having to acquire this garment. i don't even know anyone who owns them, 'cept maybbe my 75-year old mom, who has been known to don them to hide her varicosity.

i could probably make it in the 8-9 range. closer to 8 if i bring a little work with me. starting out at 10 is definitely too late for my early-rising ass and its need for that morning run.

    a dh lesbian night?
  • Don't think I'll make it if you guys do it this Monday, as I'll be coming back from vacation late that night and probably won't make it home till midnight or so. But I'd be up for going some other time!
  • hrm. well. like I said, I'm willing to go any monday night, but I don't generally get back to the nabe til 9:45 or so. if you don't have my cell #, PM me and I'll give it to you - that way you can decide if you want to go and I'll meet you there. yes, the you is general in this - as long as you're not a serial killer, I'll hang out at a lesbian night with you. Sheba was nice! she gave me a shot for my birthday (even though it was 3 weeks ago)!
  • Subject: Going this Monday?

I'd be up for going this coming Monday night, July 17th

    Anyone else going??
  • okay! for multiple reasons, I gave up going to my monday night pilates sessions, so now I could actually be at this tonight at 8 p.m. so ... who wants to go? I've already got at least one person's number to contact. :)
  • Did y'all check this out? Curious as to how it was. Btw, if anyone is interested, a friend of mine is having a party for Queer ladies at South Paw on Thursday (7/20). He's a good d.j.. it should be fun.

I'm up for going sometime, but can't make it tonight.
  • Sweet... next time then.
  • related note. is there a large lesbian comunity in the slope? cause i never seen that many lesbians in the past. but now days i see alot and some in ph too.
  • Park Slope is well known around the world for having a large Lesbian presence and has been since the 70s. It seems that the population in PH is growing too (though this is based on anecdotal evidence and probably largely due to slope spillover).

Just out of curiousity though, what exactly are you seeing when you 'see' lesbians? If it's just the haircut you're looking at, you're probably not seeing most of us.

    FYI:
Via the Community Board Six website -- The area prides itself on its diversity . . . it boasts the second highest gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender (GLBT) population in the City, the highest lesbian population in the City (perhaps country),
  • i'm up for next time, too!! even tho i bagged out last time. and i am definitely sporting the wrong (no) haircut. i may even be able to scare up another ph lesbian to join :-)

holding hands :P, etc... the obvious clues cuase i have no idea what a lesbian looks like. in fact my last gf is a lesbian. didnt know. and hell i ever ask her to marry me lol.
  • I'm up to go next time, too. sadly, I made many calls/sent many texts and no one came out to meet me.

so. anyone up for it monday, august 21st?
  • I'll check it out tomorrow if other folks are going. Is it a happy hour thing or later?
  • I'm up for a drink or two, if earlyish -- looks like I'm going to have a late night tonight, and it's a work night and all.

    Anyone going tonight??
  • i popped my head in there twice on monday eve, at 830-ish and 1015ish. both times my head was one of the few in evidence, and definitely the only one smiling. that is to say, it didn't feel particularly welcoming. and i need very little discouragement. -- maybe it was an off-night? i plan to keep trying. maybe once the season changes and the women come home from their vacations!
