Park Slope - Land of Terrible Bagels — Brooklynian

Park Slope - Land of Terrible Bagels

jamzer
edited November -1 in Park Slope
Ok, so last weekend I went to La Bagel Delight near Key Food and bought bagels that needed to be cooked for another 10 minutes or so. This weekend I got some bagels from Bagel World on 5th near JJ Byrne Park and they were overcooked. I don't like spending 5 hours in line then being abused, so I stay away from the bad bagels at Bageltique.

What is a bagel lover to do? Don't ask me the schlep to Bergen Bagels or Terrace (they are both great, but a car ride away). Any good bagels around here? What are my options? HELP!!!

  • Bagel Hole on 14th and 7th is good, but they are small.

Bagel Hole's bagels are good because they are small -- dense and chewy, the way NY bagels should be, not like the hyperinflated catcher's mitts at the places mentioned above. Them's Midwestern-style bagels, yecch.

There's a fairly good bagel place at 5th Avenue and 17th[?] but it's probably as far from you as Terrace Bagels.

see i diagree about the small thing. yes, H&H bagels are small. i grew up in Flushing, Queens and there are places in Queens that make bagels the way they should be made - big, crispy on the bottom and chewy on the inside. there is a great place on Union St and 31Rd in Flushing and then there is Bagel Oasis on Horace Harding. they places make Bagels, not the round whitebread that's served in this neighborhood.
  • Mid-Western bagel? WTF? Bagels are as NY as they get! I only go to Terrace (I'm lucky they are so close to me), so I'm bagel-spoiled (as opposed to regular PS-spoiled, as we all have been told we are  )

Seriously, though, you know who has great bagels? Montreal. They have a slightly malty, sweet taste to them, so they're not what you'd expect from a New York bagel, but for a different style, they're excellent: again, chewy and dense.

BTW, I like Terrace, but WTF is up with the tip jar there? I should tip you for getting me a freaking bagel from the wire rack? I don't tip the butcher across the street when he gets me a lamb chop.

Everybody has a tip jar these days - coffee houses, pizza places, you name it. I don't put anything in there most of the time. Occasionally some loose change - if I get good service.

yea, Bagel Oasis, they completely rock. 24 hours too if I recall correctly. they weren't mutant bagels though by any means. reasonably sized bagels I'd say. The place on 5th between President and Carroll (is it Carroll, I still get confused) across from Scaredy Kat is decent...5th avenue Bageltique I think it's called (?) currently under renovation (they sure did need it too) curious to see what they do in there as they're only closed for 2 weeks, supossedly.

Bageltique though, no where near as good as Bagel Oasis in Queens. Murray's in Manhattan pretty damn good too. Can't say I have tried anywhere else in the Slope so......
  • Um, La beagel makes great bagels, what's with the hate?
  • Bagel Hole is the best, although I'll admit that they've been a little inconsistant for the past few months.
Terrace bagels are a close second. The mini-bagels there are almost as good as Bagel Hole.

My parents' bagel place came in second (trade papers) to Montreal. They owned Max's Bagels/Bagels by Max on 7th Avenue by St. Johns. Now those were bagels! So far the only bagels I like are in Manhattan on E72nd Street between 1st Ave and 2nd Ave (I forget the name), the best bialy's I've had recently were at the Park Cafe on 7th Ave by Berkeley. Saying that though they taste great only when toasted and you're limited to butter or cream cheese as a spread since the nova isn't that great.

Coney Island Bagels and Bialys at 2359 Coney Island Ave has the absolute best bialys. Not exactly in the neighborhood though (but it is an easy ride on the Q train).
  • Bagel Hole all the way! seriously though, they are some of the best bagels I've had..ever. Used to be a La Bagel fan - but no more. They do have superior "accessories" though to Bagel Hole. Better tuna salad, egg salad, lox, etc.

Good to know. I'm headed there in a couple weeks an I'll be sure to have a bagel or two. It's been a long time since I was in Quebec...anything else I should check out?

Locally, I roll Terrace. When La Bagel Delight is on, they're on big....but I have had a few lousy bagels there.

Edit: After reading Idlewild's comments, perhaps I misunderstood - is Montreal a shop, or are we talking the city? I feel stupid, but I will say I have had a really good bagel or two as far north as Bangor....

Uh, yeah. The only bagels we had out there were frozen Lenders. Not everything big is midwestern. [/i]
  • That last midwestern "guest" was me.

The city of Montreal. It's been a while since I've been myself, but you should get a smoked-meat sandwich (Is Schwartz's the name of the famous deli there? I think so, but am too lazy to look it up). I remember all sorts of good ethnic foods in the city, particularly Vietnamese. Poutine (french fries with gravy and cheese) always sounds better, to me, than it ends up tasting, but if it sounds like it could be your thing, you'll find that there.

I too am from the midwest and you can most certainly find bagels made there -- they're just not any good, which was my point. Big and fluffy and with as much character as a supermarket hamburger bun.
  • The Bagel Factory on 5th Ave and 17th has great bagels. I used to go to Terrace Bagels on Prospect Park West, but there's always a line there.
  • Terrace and Bergen are worth the trip (Terrace a notch higher, in my book - even though I'm a very close walk from Bergen.) Walk there and back, and use that as a justification for getting a great [bacon/ham/etc], egg and cheese on a bagel. Mmmmmmmm.

    Now I want bagels! :D

Thank you --so it's not just me. Last few bagels I've gotten there were inedible. Something has gone very wrong -- I hope they fix it.
  • I got a bagel for dinner last night (Terrace Bagels, of course). I blame "you people"
  • I've been going to La Bagel (7th Ave / 5th St) since they opened in '86. The bagels there have always been great. Surprised yours was undercooked, I'd recommend giving them another try.
  • i like both bagel world and bageltique (which is under renovation), but like flexi i'm near terrace so i usually go there.

as for the whole "tip jar" thing, you shouldn't even get me started. tips are for waiters and waitresses who get paid less than minimum wage because they'll be getting tips. i'm not paying someone a tip for making me--or handing me--a sandwich. i think the whole thing is rude, but that's just me.

I'm sure those guys don't make THAT much over minimum wage, LOL
I don't mind a tip jar, it's "there" if you wanna flig a coin or cash in there.
The place I hit by work for coffee has a tip jar, I tip the dude who makes mine and my buddies iced lattes 'cause he charges us for one, or the price of a small regular coffee. I feel like we have an "understanding" 8)
A tip jar at like the counter of a dry cleaner, that would make me giggle.
  • I really like Bagel World, too. Maybe give it another shot.

according to the NY Times, waiters/waitresses can be paid $3.85 per hour in New York City; minimum wage is $6.75.

i'm not saying anyone who works hard deserves to be paid this pittance, but that was originally the whole point of tips.

It was a bagel store in Montreal.

Heck, the title of this post alone "Park Slope: Land of Terrible Bagels" could be considered "fighting words" by some.

I was glad it opened because that stretch of 5th Avenue needed a bagel shop, but I'm not sure I've ever talked to anybody who actually liked it (as opposed to, "eh, it's OK if you don't want to walk farther"). Big, spongey, sweet pillow bagels like La Bagel's, except even softer.
  • you guys are making me so hungry... i won't even tell you how many pieces of bread a bagel equals. why bagels are treats here. which sucks. because you should be able to eat bagels every day!
