TOTA's on Utica Featured on Serious Eats :D

  • OMG!! YUMMYYYYY!!

  • You know, I was really very happy when a lot of people outside of the respective communities/neighborhoods didn't know about these places. It's going to suck, now that the secret's out.

  • Why would you say that, Idle? I mean, I hardly doubt that lines will be out the door now that "the word's out" but I'm sure the owners are more than pleased with the publicity. Business is business and to be upset that a local bakery is getting attention outside your precious (not enclosed, btw) area is just unreasonable and silly.

Don't worry, CH ain't going to be PS anytime soon, trust.

  • Actually, CH, Lefferts, Bed-Sty and even the fringes of East NY, are indeed, changing. Maybe not into Park Slope, but certainly hints of Prospect Heights. And at quite a not-so-slow rate. And, my guess is a lot of the local businesses will be out of business because of changing tastes.

  • Buddha says: Life is change.

  • Whynot says: When change is required, not changing is destructive.

  • WhyNot even looks a little like Buddha!

  • Whynot says: Eating at Totas will not help one not look like Budda.

  • I say: Yes indeed, life is change. But changing over from delicious ethnic shops to more coffee shops; maybe not destructive, but certainly very predictable and bland.

  • Omg, man- chill. Jeez- just because they got a little (and it IS just a little) publicity, does not mean its the 'end of the neighborhood,' ethnically speaking. You know, maybe the owners will, God forbid, want to sell or close the business and go back to their homeland and retire with friends and loved ones long left behind. You just assume everyone running a business wants it to last forever???

Running a bakery= waking up every day at 3am.

  • Yes, I know. I used to work in a bagel store. As well as some other jobs that required waking up at, or working at 3AM. And if they feel like selling, good for them. If they feel like staying, even better. And if they have to shut down because tastes are changing, well, such is the Life. And I didn't assume anything. All I did was bemoan that some tucked away, non to popular, cultural and delicious places have been discovered.

God forbid they get some recognition and more business.

Not to drag this on (well, yea ok, I guess I am) but you do realize you're talking out of both sides of your pie hole, right? On the one hand you don't want them to be discovered so they can be CH's best kept secret, but then on the other hand, you don't want them to be taken over by coffee shops. How they gonna stay in business and keep those evil little coffee shops away if you want to hide them in your secret little CH stash o' good shit?

But like I said, I seriously doubt those two bakeries are going to be slammed now by hipsters and PS mommies looking to get their Caribbean on. It was good publicity, but hardly Earth moving.

Are we talking blackberry pie hole or a mixed berry & blackberry pie hole?

  • Yum that bread looks sooooo good! I want to put butter and jam on it -- blackberry jam, or plum butter -- and pair it with some strong coffee.
