new to the neighborhood
hi everyone,
i recently moved to the neighborhood with 2 friends and I and do not make a lot of money (unlike them). I had been looking in Prospect Heights, the East Village, and even Jersey City, but we found a bargain in Park Slope and couldn't let it go (large 3BR for an amazing price). I'm going to try very hard to live the same lifestyle before I made this stupid move, so I was wondering what kind of specials are in the area that won't burn a hole in my pocket...perhaps decent restaurants and happy hours?

Hi Brian, welcome to the nabe.
Where in Park Slope do you live (cross streets)?
There are bargains around, but you have to look for them.
I'll give you two suggestions:
O'Connor's is a very cheap bar (5th Ave just north of Bergen), Calexico is a great & cheap Mexican joint (5th just south of St. Marks).
Good luck living on a budget. It's not impossible. -

Welcome!
You are not alone.
Please allow me to interrogate you in order to best serve you.
How familiar are you with all of New York City? How far are you willing to travel? What types of food do you like to eat or despise? What are your interests/hobbies? What type of “scene†are you most comfortable in? Anything you absolutely cannot tolerate?
Of course since we’re online for the whole world to read any personal details you post, I wouldn’t blame you for dodging any questions above.
It would probably be easier if you did not live with people with higher income. No matter what “cheap options†are available in the neighborhood, you may feel compelled to join them to venues that break your budget. Then again if your friends hate spending money, going out with them might never break your wallet. -
I'm sorry for being a complete jerk but I can't help but read what's above me with the voice of the guy who does "welcome to moviefone, please select your movie from the following 9 options"

Thanks everyone for your replies! I am living on 10th street and 7th ave...a great location if you ask me. I am open to every ethnic food and I'm trying to stay healthy so I guess nothing that would give me a heart attack. I'm in my mid 20's and interested in meeting people in their 20's (early or late) and where I can meet some intelligent, sophisticated and attractive single women. I'm extremely laid back and find satisfaction in microbrews or whiskey on the rocks and a game of darts or pool surrounded by friendly people, the Mets game on TV and good music (I like a lot of indie stuff). I cannot tolerate obnoxious drunks looking for fights and snobby suburban kids (even though I grew up in the 'burbs). My roommates enjoy going out and spending money, which isn't a big deal because I have a lot of friends who live in Queens and Manhattan and who are in the same boat as me. I'm also very familiar with New York City and will be spending most of my weekly daytime hours and some evenings in the Village.
I'd also love to find a place that has scrabble night, as I love playing scrabble...although I always find a way to lose.
Hope that helps! -

Brian, I'm also new to the forum, and relatively new to Park Slope/New York having just moved here not too long ago. I haven't browsed these forums a lot just yet, and may open myself to some bashing and a lot of "are you kidding me?" responses. You mentioned cheap and that you're into indie stuff, music-wise (which I am too, pretty heavily). One of the first places I went...actually, the first night I moved here, was Great Lakes on 5th Avenue @ 1st Street (I think). It's not a looker, but that's the kind of place I like. Beers were pretty cheap, no obnoxious drunks were to be found, and the jukebox is solid. With my 3 bucks, I remember playing Q and Not U, Headphones and Archers of Loaf. I may be way off base here since I'm pretty new...others, feel free to disuade, but I was pretty happy with my decision. Hope that helps a little.

Dude - first thing you do is the opposite of what Armchair says :-)
It's definitely NOT all married w/kids or gay (since I'm not in any of those catergories).
There are a ton of Mexican/Dominican/etc. places on 5th Ave. where you can eat cheaply.
I'll try to think of some more. I eat bagels and pizza when broke -

I believe Moonies on Flatbush and Park Pl still has a dart board. It's a pretty cool bar. The bar on 8th Street and 7th Ave might have one as well. There's a whole slew of bars on 5th Ave between 3rd st and 9th street such Carrie Nation and the 5th Amendment. You might want to check out the PS Food Coop on Union between 6th and 7th Aves. for the health food thing. Some people might discourage you about it for valid reasons such as haphazard scheduling and politics. Still, the produce cannot be beat. As far as inexpensive healthy restaurants, Mr. Falafel is pretty good. Red Hot Szechuan is also decent is as is Tofu, nxt to Mr Falafel. Taro Sushi on Dean St. bet. 5th Ave and Flatbush is the absolute bomb on Friday and Saturday nights. You might also want to check out Coney Island Avenue between Church Ave and Ave. H and look at the Pakistani and Indian steam tables. They have alot of bean and veggie dishes as well as meat. Avoid the Afghani restaurant (Bahar) on CIA and Newkirk. Other than that when you get to the point of not giving a damn the world is your oyster in terms of cheap eats. Especially on 5th Avenue. Tacos Nuevos makes better steamed tongue than my fellow Jews. -

And furthermore(grumbles under his breath:" fucking loggin problems)! That's my post^^^. *snap*

Commonwealth has (or at least used to, I haven't checked recently) Scrabble night on Sundays.
I love me some board games. I have a ton, and now I need to invite some people over (or go somewhere else) to play.
What I need is good pub trivia too. Buttermilk used to have it once a month but they stopped last year. -
i love scrabble. where's commonwealth?

5th Ave......11th? 12? somewhere around there -

5th ave & 12th.
Buttermilk is the place on 5th ave near 16th, right? I remember seeing signs posted for a backgammon tourney there & hearing about board game nights being hosted there, but this was at least a year ago, so I can't say if they still do that. Somebody should, though. -

I have soooo many board games, now I just need to invite some people over (edit: kind of sad to realize I wrote the same exact thing in my previous post....whatever
)
Buttermilk always has games behind the bar for the asking, but I don't know of any organized board game nights that they have.
As for Brian's original drink special/bargains question........I walked by Rhythm & Booze yesterday (10th Ave. and Prospect Ave) and they have happy hour 3-6 every day + a bunch of extra hours (can't remember) and it was $2 pints (domestic) and $3 pints (imported). That said, I'm not saying that it's a decent crowd. I went in once and walked right out ....they were having a Halloween party (a few days before) and everybody was in costume except for me and my friend. -
