Does anyone know a good vet? — Brooklynian

Does anyone know a good vet?

I'm looking for a vet in the area. Close to kingston would be great. I'd appreciate any tip. Thanks.

  • Closest is probably Bed-Stuy Vet on Thompkins and Halsey. However, I offer her up with the caveat that many folks think she overcharges. I personally haven't had any bad experiences and found her to be reasonably priced (plus she takes Muffin certificates). She is however without a doubt the closest vet in the hood.

  • I get regular, check-up type care for my mutt when I am on car trips outside of the city.

They are usually much cheaper than any of the ones in the city.

I only use local ones (like Animal Kind in the Slope) for emergency care.

  • We highly recommend Animal Kind. We love Dr. Spiegel.

  • Ok, I am a lurker who never posts, but I just had to comment on this. Do not ever go to bed-Stuy vet. We took our cat there for a cleaning. They removed teeth without asking and left a huge burn on his back from leaving the cauterizing gun in the wrong place. They gave him so much dope to knock him out that he couldn't walk for two days. This place should lose it's license. When I was there waiting for my cat, a dog died because it was dehydrated from vomiting so much. I was so sketched out by the place that I would never go back, no matter the reason or convenience.

I now go to hope vet or out of town when possible. It's also worth it to go upstate for teeth cleanings for me, with my two cats it ends up being a third of he cost or so. Hope vet is wonderful though.

Hope you find a good vet! (no pun intended). Let use know who you go with!

  • I've heard only good things about Hope Vet, but they can be pricey, but again, I hear it's worth it.

I really liked the doctors at Park Slope Vet Care on 413 5th ave for my cat. Payment plans, really gentle with my pet, good people and they double check with you before doing any procedure -so you don't end up with a surprise bill.

  • I am not sure if it is too far for you, but I also bring my cats to Animal Kind on 7th Ave. I have used them for over two years and think the doctors, groomer, and staff are excellent. ;-)

  • Thanks for the references to everyone.

  • Prospect Heights Animal Hospital is excellent - http://www.phanimalhospital.com/

  • I used to go to Animal Kind but now I am a Hope Vet kinda gal.

  • Brooklyn Cares on Fulton between Washington and Grand, highly recommend. They can be pricey with some things but be up front and tell them what you can afford, they'll work with you. I know most of the people that work there and both vets, I hear a lot of what goes on behind the scenes. What I hear makes me like them even more.

I do not like Animal Kind, I was friends with someone who worked there and the stuff I heard was not good at all. That plus my own bad experiences there were enough to make me never go there, not even in an emergency.

  • Fwiw, Hope has recently undergone some changes. I don't use them but a friend does and some of the staff, vets included have left Hope and started a new clinic near Hope. I think there were some differences of opinion on how things should be done and get the feeling that the staff who left went partially due to not liking how the clinic was moving more towards pushing products and tests, etc.

They do have great services for people whose pets are dying/near death (social worker for the people, nice comfortable home-like settings, etc.). I think that is a strength of Hope's.

  • OpossumQueen is right about Hope. Dr. Lischen and her husband Dr. Humphries opened One Love down the street from Hope, I've heard nothing but good things about them.
