Numbers prove bike riders in NYC are insignificant.

The NYC DOH is presently in the process of doing very comprehensive survey on on how many people bike to work, and as well as the overall amount of exercise they receive.
Although not perfect, the survey mitigates many of the data collection flaws discussed above.
http://www.nyc.gov/html/doh/html/survey/pat.shtml
Basically, random NYC residents are given a comprehensive phone survey, and then outfitted with GPS and heart rate monitors for a week.
Use of bike lanes and commuting to work via bike, receive a lot of attention in the survey.

So there's no original link, and the data is heavily flawed.
Excellent.

ok I accept defeat on this issue because WhyFi, your clearly more interested in trying to be cutesy and send veiled insults my way then actually back up your assertion.
If you ever wanna have an actual, factual conversation I'm ready but until then, you got it. Otherwise, I'll have to deal with the moderators basically telling me that I can't overtly call you a "mfer" but you allowed to insinuate my capacity for knowledge cannot comprehend this issue. That seems fair.
You make me sick. It's people like you who destroy honest discourse. -

Like I said WhyFi you got it.
Keep making jokes like that as you hide behind an internet alias. Productive as always.

Can everyone chill with the personal insults and ripping shirts off in the street?
Thanks, EVERYONE.

According to the Post’s recapitulation of it, in addition to the .6 percent of NYers who got to work by bicycle, "The NYU study also revealed that 57 percent of New Yorkers took mass transit to work, while 29.9 drove and 10.7 walked."
Adds up to 98.2 percent? -- Home offices?
Is there some way to infer from these findings what percentage of cars on the road are going to or from work? Probably not. (Because an unknown number of the transit-takers do not have a car.)
However, from the other study, we know that bicycle use is considerably more than the commuter study indicates. Would it be wrong to assume that cars are also primarily on the road for non-commuting uses?
Is non-commuting use of a car or bicycle "insignificant"? I would argue that all users of the road are valuable, that there be no specific privilege to the road according to whether the user is going to or from work. Else, how to implement that?
Also, I think it would be less troll-y of the OP to make their topic header be "Study proves number of bike commuters is insignificant." To say that cyclists are insignificant is a misreading of the meaning of the numbers.

Did the original poster actually read this story? It really doesn't say much about anything, other than that it is really hard to pin down the number of bicyclists in the city.
Also, next time you want to prove an anti-cycling point, do it with a paper that is NOT the Post. They have a very clear vendetta against bike lanes, as the headline of this story, and their history of bicycle stories shows.
I will happily debate the merits of bicycle infrastructure with you, but this is just silly.

Why am I a troll? The numbers are insignificant compare to the overall population of NYC. That is an accurate statement. I bike ride all the time for recreation. Still, I'm part of a minority, an insignificant number when compared to the larger population.
Again, not sure how that gives you the authority to call someone a troll. But again, why have a conversation when you can sling insults from behind an alias.

I assume you are referring to that I said the topic heading you wrote is troll-y?
See here, you do it correctly. You say "the numbers are insignificant." That is good! Whereas in the header you said "bike riders are insignificant." See the difference?

dear slope, respectfully I did not make the comment about anybody walking around in a 10x10 studio. I also did not have much to do with wholesale gas prices doubling within 4 years. I also have little to do with the demands on the electric grid, the cheap money available for 10 years has seen explosive construction(by NYC standards). Throughout four of the boroughs where once stood a single to 10 family home, have been raised and reconstructed into 20-200 plus apt buildings.
I have been part of meetings for the DEP planning teams that deal with the removal and remediation of soil for water treatment plants. During the meetings, minutes of which I am not able to produce or publish, planners state that heavy truck traffic causes lots of damage to existing roads.Just as it will damage all of the surrounding roads near Atlantic Yards. The math if you choose to it is simple, there are more apts, with more things that use electricity inside. There are more registered vehicles in NYC than there were in 1990.Lower Manhattan may be easier for you to digest 3 of the bridges and 1 tunnel dump traffic to and from Brooklyn. Lower Manhattan has seen the single most explosive rise in building permits that convert building once used for white collar business to high end residential. The electric and civic demands on lower Manhattan and the connections to Brooklyn are easily seen. Brokerages that went dark at 4pm on Friday and the lights turn back on at 5am on Monday. Now people, there cars, computer, flat screen TVs and hot water all need power all weekend and far after the regular close of business.
Mr.Slope you may be holding back with your genius, just toying with us. You know compounds that will make asphalt endure overloaded trucks and snowy winters. You may also hold the answer to street congestion and high gas prices.I don't think that bicycles can deliver home heating oil, or to and from transportation for the elderly to the doctor or hospital. I would not bring a newborn home after delivery in a bike basket or baby seat. You will have no solution for any problem just a hack or 10 at people who want to use what we have now to solve a problem we have now. I look forward to your wheel reinvention, please start w the subway and the BQE, until then don't come outside there are an army of bikers young and old that want a piece of non believers.
I can only hope that we all agree that the easing of traffic and parking rules in Park Slope are a disaster. Cause and effect at the lowest level, move a street sweeping sign to help residents, instead people commute from other areas for long term parking, Non-slopes using the slope as a parking lot. It is the shortest path between 2 points so as lower Manhattan swells with buildings expect more bullshit to hit Park Slope and surrounding areas, 20-25 minutes to Wall St and no out of the city hassles. And soon will come the parking punks like they have in LA. USC,UCLA all have them take up 4 parking spots w 2 cars waiting for the pre or after party for Nets games or 1 of the 20 sold out shows JayZ will perform as he opens up Barclay's pre made traffic jam. I can't wait to see your response to auto traffic then, all roads lead to Park Slope. You should probably check w OEM. when you need a detour Park Slope is way better for parking and bars post game than Crown heights, Ft Green or Carrol Gardens. You will be back beggin' for bicycles.
Don't be surprised if the Nets give away bikes after people can't get to a game or concert because of conjestion.Don't fear bike or Whyfi fear the basketball people with their cars and 1000 watt systems gettin' the pregame/concert edge off in front of your brownstone. You may be a little near sighted now but the stadium will bring things into focus for you. Can you say dollar vans on 5th ave

I certainly read the original article.
Whats wrong with the NY Post for this article? This wasn't one of their Page 6 posts or a snarky story regarding their "expose" on something trivial.
They passed along a study. Please Jamzer, don't give me that. No you weren't. In an serious conversation, asking someone their point after it has already clearly been stated and has even been counter-pointed by others is the equivalent of saying FU and I don't appreciate it.
