Parking/Alternate Side Parking — Brooklynian

Parking/Alternate Side Parking

Hi again,

We have 1 car that my husband will likely use to drive to work or he may take the train to work in Sunset Park. Either way, getting rid of our car is not an option. Are there areas within Bay Ridge that are decent for parking?

I've also been trying to find what the Alternate Side Parking rules are for Bay Ridge and haven't found anything. Does anyone know?

Many Thanks!

  • You should have moved to Gerritsen Beach. Good luck.

  • I admit that I am not terribly familiar with Bay Ridge. However, on the several occasions that I have tried to go out to dinner at restaurants there, I have found parking to be incredibly difficult. Many or most of the houses on the side streets have driveways, which leaves very little room for street parking in between the driveways.

Of course, if you are able to find an apartment in one of those houses with driveways, that might solve your problem, assuming the landlord agrees to share the driveway.

You should take an exploratory trip out there before you make any decisions.

  • Booklaw brings up an interesting point. Have you moved to Bay Ridge yet? And if you have not, are you looking for an apartment or house?

  • Check the NYC DOT website for details. I live in Bay Ridge. Parking in the neighborhood is notoriously bad, and is the topic of conversation at approximately 100% of CB10 meetings, 100% of the time. Approaching comedic levels.

Parking in the afternoons is easy. Parking after 8pm is an experience. The best option is to talk to your neighbors. Many of the elderly on my street rent out their driveways to help cover rising utility costs.

  • Depends on where in Bay Ridge. In north Bay Ridge, parking is moderately easy on Wakeman Place. I didn't catch whether he worked in Sunset Park or he intended to drive to Sunset Park and catch the train from there. If the former, why not bicycle or take the 5th Ave B63 bus?

  • Thanks everyone! We have not moved yet (not for another 6 weeks) but we're focusing our search on Bay Ridge. My husband works in Sunset Park. I have to speak with him about taking the train or bus to work instead of driving. However, there are many times he needs his car to travel between locations (Queens, Manhattan etc.) during the day. Most of the time he'll be home around 5:30. It sounds like parking may not be so bad then? Thanks again!

eta: When parking is at it's worse how long would you say it takes to find a spot? Right now we live in the Bronx. We are moving to Brooklyn to shorten his commute. If he's going to spend crazy amounts of time finding parking then it's kind of moot. Although his morning commute will be a breeze.

  • I live in north Bay Ridge and have a garage so I'm not an authority on it. But I usually walk the dogs between 5:30 and 7pm and I usually see a few empty spots then. South Bay Ridge is another story because of the residential density of all the apartment houses and lots of driveways.

  • Parking in Bay Ridge is indeed a problem. However Sunset Park is far easier. (It's probably not convenient to leave the car at work & take the bus both ways. :D)

The best way to understand our hallowed alternate side of the street parking regulations (aside from memorizing the website)is to realize that they allow the street sweepers to clean the block (theoretically). Residential streets adjacent to shopping streets are cleaned more frequently (again in theory) than those deeper inside strictly residential areas. But if you think this is bad, try Manhattan!

  • Why not live in Sunset Park and save yourself a headache?
