Didn't they open up one of tons Petco's in PS?

I've not seen one in any of the stores around here (and the local Petco/Petsmart hasn't opened yet). Petland has a substitute where you write on the tag and then basically shrink wrap it.

It's been 2+ years but I had tags made at the Union Square and UES 86th St stores. I paid at the register for a token to use in the machine. Worked just fine then.
Besides the tags, I bought collars with my phone number embroidered on them. I think I ordered mine through Petco or Petsmart's website and they were plain and cheap. That way the dog always has my number on him (since he always has his collar on), even if he doesn't have his tags on (the wire holding them broke recently and I haven't managed to replace it).

I'm a big fan of collar tags from here - http://www.boomerangtags.com/page.php?c=collartags&k=h
My dog is very...bouncy and squirmy, and I could only take about 5 minutes of her ID tag banging against her dog license. This solves that problem - the collar is threaded through the ID plate, leaving the dog license to dangle alone and quiet.

The pet tags and collars are fine but be sure to microchip your precious pets. Its the only guaranteed way to make sure your contact information stays with the pet. I've seen people uncollar dogs and let them loose! Dogs can sometimes slip out of collars, especially big necked breeds. Microchips are scanned at every vet and shelter and can help you reunite with your pet when every tag or collar is missing. hoping I'm preaching to the choir here.

I have this...idea - that microchips should be mandatory. Breeders (who should also have to register to keep un-neutered dogs; all others must be neutered/spayed in my dream world!) should have to put them in, the chips should have to be registered when a pup is sold so we can track the scum who dump pets on the street and fine them to cover their pet's shelter expenses and vet care. And oh yeah, help owners recover their lost pets. Just my dream. Know it'll never happen. Sigh. End derail.

Thanks all!

Petshop on 8th avenue and 8th street has the engraving machine and a large selection of tags.

The shop on 8th/8th closed about a month ago. They didn't have proper permits or zoning (or something like that) to have that shop open.

Just a ditto on Toadetette's call to Micro Chip. Once in a while someone in the house will pick up one of my Maltese and discover a little "bump/pimple" in their neck and alert me to their alarming discovery. Of course that is the chip, that if you know where it is or happen upon it with petting, feels like a small grain of rice. I always tell people it is an "insurance policy" I never want to cash in on...but truly micro-chipping can save you the heartache of losing your pet...with no the Happy Homecoming.
