Franklin Dean, suspicious place — Brooklynian

Franklin Dean, suspicious place

Hi everybody,

I am thinking of moving into an apartment at the near Franklin and Dean St and I noticed a place at the corner with loud music and a sign that says "member's only" and "no children allowed." Does anyone have an idea what this place is?

  • It's appears to be a private social club which among other things means it does not need a liquor license to serve alcohol to members. I've seen the door cracked open a few times, mostly guys sitting around drinking and playing dominos. The windows are covered up and they keep to themselves for the most part, during warm weather they venture outdoors to fire up the bbq. Most of the regulars appear to be of middle age or older and uninterested in disturbing the peace and bringing their club activities to the attention of police.

  • That place has been there for years, its usually just a bunch of old farts sitting aroung drinking beer and playing cards. In the summer they sell plants and watermelon on the street. They're pretty harmless, however they do not have any licenses to run that establishment and they are required to have a liquor license.

  • Oh I have seen that place! Yeah, they literally just sit outside, watchin the day go by, selling plants and watermelons. I've found they are harmless and friendly if you say hello!

I've seen these sorts of private social clubs in Astoria as well.

  • I lived on that corner for two years. There's nothing to worry about...except for being denied membership; )

  • Overall, what is that corner like? Where do you do laundry or get groceries? I found a great apartment on Franklin between Dean and Pacific, but I'm more familiar with Franklin closer to Eastern Parkway. I'm a white female in her late 20s and have lived on Sterling and Rogers for the past year. Is Franklin and Dean a good move? Any insight would be great - a lot of the convos on here about that area are several years old...

    Thanks!

  • Reviews of the new Compare supermarket have been overwhelmingly positive
