Pigeon Problems

I have two pigeons that are hiding in between my trash bins. We try to shoo them away, but they just hop around and keep returning. One might be sick. I don't know, but it looks almost like one is standing guard over the other. They are creating a giant mess with their pigeon poop. Is there some animal control agency that I can call to get rid of them?

    You can call an exterminator to come out or you could contact someone to help catch them and take care of them for a donation similar to what you would pay the exterminator to kill them.

    maybe we need a cat.

    I hear they are not arrested for such offenses

    I hope so but I doubt it and I'm sure someone would "remove" them for money. Empty Cages and NYCPRC would help these pigeons and they sound like they really need it. So sad to hear that one is trying to protect the other.

    Common rock pigeons are not endangered and are generally considered to be a pest species, so it is not illegal for an exterminator, cat, dog or raptor to kill them. That said, animal cruelty is illegal so if you plan to kill them, you'd be well advised to do so as humanely as possible (cats, dogs and raptors are not subject to the sanctions of animal cruelty legislation, so your cat can freely kill a pigeon in any manner he or she feels is expedient). The mere presence of a feline will ensure your yard is free from pigeons (although it won't stop them roosting on higher areas unless the cat can get up there). Plastic owls don't work.

    You can call the crazy pigeon lady on my street. She's been leaving pigeon feeding tips on signs around the 'hood, so she clearly has expertise with the species....

    I think Sean Casey Rescue will do pigeons, especially if one is sick or injured.

    I used a super shooter water gun to chase pigeons off ledges. It works and it doesn't hurt them. They hate being shot with water. I shot mine twice and then they got the message and never came back. If you are doing it close up you might want to use a smaller water pistol.

    Funny, they have been sitting on the ledge of a bedroom window in which a cat often sits. They don't seem afraid. It seems as if they might be looking for a place to nest. I found a stick on the ledge above my door that wasn't there before, and that is where the birds relocated when I shooed them from the stoop area when I came home today. I then splashed some water on them from my window and they flew across the street and settled on the building across the street. Then I saw them walking around in the street, two of them seemingly following a third. Perhaps they are a family. I will keep shooing them away and see if that solves the problem and keeps them away.

    OK. The shooing did not work. I went down to my stoop around 10:20 p.m. and found one sitting on the rim of the trash bin and the other sitting on a small indentation in the wall. I tried shooting them with a stream of water, but they just sat there and didn't move, no matter how much water I fired. I then took my ice breaker tool and tried to shoo them off by shoving it at them and they just fluttered around and wouldn't move, not even when I disturbed the trash bin. I've had enough. Time for someone to come and take them away.

    some big control companies use this stuff that comes in a caulking gun tube format.Keeps birds off of attennas, controls, motors,electronics,ect. You squeeze it out in the area and they can't stand it. Rain and snow must really knock down it's effectiveness. I don't know if the Bird-x brand is the best but it does work. I seldom see the contractor that I saw using it but if I get the brand of the "good stuff" I will post it.

    I've done some investigation of this problem, and from what I can tell, the problem is that there must be a nest nearby -- most likely underneath my neighbors air conditioner -- and the two pest pigeons are babies ready to fly from the nest but too afraid. That is why they hang around nearby at night and during the day. We'll need an exterminator to remove the next and put wire mesh underneath the a/c unit to prevent this from happening. We had the same thing happen a year or two ago.

    I'll be sure to contact Sean if I need him. For now, I'll leave the babies alone and let them fly away on their own. After that, momma and poppa will have to find a new place for their nest.

    Yea, I was going to say it sounded like there are babies involved. Good luck and please don't kill them!
