Proposed Angle Parking on 11th Ave — Brooklynian

Proposed Angle Parking on 11th Ave

Tomorrow, Community Board 7 will discuss a proposal to switch from parallel parking to 60 degree back in parking on 11th Avenue between 19th St. and Prospect Park South West.

Personally, I am opposed to the change.

It will look horrible - While I don't think asphalt is great to look at, I've never wished to have more cars parked on my street, either.

It won't improve the parking situation. Adding spaces will only increase the number of vehicle trips in the area, and thus congestion, pollution, noise,

Many studies have shown an increase in accidents when parallel parking is converted to back-in high angle parking. Drivers exiting a parking stall often have their view of oncoming traffic obscured by the car next to them resulting in side swipe collisions.

It is difficult to identify an open parking space leading to stop-start movements and rear-end collisions.

11th avenue is a wide street with excess capacity but the best use for that capacity is not more parking. I'd prefer wider sidewalks, more trees or plants, or even, dare I say it, a bike lane.

A PDF of the proposed changes is attached.

  • seems this plan is dead, just got this email from the community board

This email was sent to several of your neighbors about an hour ago:

    Dear Friends:

Again, thank you all for taking the time to write and/or attend last night's Transportation Committee meeting regarding DOT's proposal to change 11th Avenue's parking to 60 degree angle back-in parking.

Many residents came out to voice their displeasure with the plan for a multitude of reasons. The DOT representative let us know that DOT will not move forward with the changes if the community was against it and, at the end of the meeting, she symbolically tore up with plan.

Our Committee shared the community's concerns about public safety, but also agreed that this parking plan was not the right way to approach the problem.

Our Committee voted on two motions regarding 11th Avenue last night:

The first was a motion to deny the parking plan which was presented to us.

The second was to request DOT to re-examine 11th Avenue to determine if there are other ways to improve vehicular/pedestrian safety without changing the parking to angle parking.

Both motions passed committee and will be sent to the full board to vote on the evening of May 18.

Once again, I thank you for your interest and input. Please feel free to contact me if you have any additional comments or questions.

    Sincerely,

    Jeremy Laufer

    District Manager
