filthy Yogo Monster vs. super clean Culture

Yogo Monster's latest incarnation as a self-service yogurt place encourages disgustingly unhealthy practices. I went in today and won't be back. What I saw was revolting. Kids were sampling the yogurts by putting their fingers right on the dispensers and then licking their fingers. On to the next dispenser. No one was supervising. There were 2 young women passing out cups and weighing the contents, but they are apparently not instructed to watch the customers' dispensing habits. So kids can sample the toppings with their fingers and then finger those taps you'll be dispensing your yogurt from. I'm guessing that's not the kind of bacteria you want in your yog.

I'd rather stand on line at Culture and get some clean yogurt from a dispenser that hasn't been tampered with. Plus their yogurt is much denser and tastier. PS: I have no vested interest in Culture, just in staying healthy.

  • Looks like another case of

    FIRST WORLD PROBLEMS!!!

  • What time were you there? I was there at 1pm, spend about one hour right next to the yogurt dispensers and never saw anything like what you describe.

  • I was there around 3:30pm. There were about 15 kids there at that time. It was pretty chaotic, with lots of sampling of toppings and yogurt. I'm glad I witnessed that because if I'd gone at a quieter time I wouldn't have seen how unsanitary it is.

  • Frozen ice cream/yogurt machines are disgusting regardless. If they aren't cleaned and maintained correctly(which they usually aren't) you're playing russian roulette with E. Coli and Listeria among other tasty things. Check google if you do not believe: http://lmgtfy.com/?q=soft+ice+cream+bacteria

The same thing was found with fountain soda. Do yourself a favor and stick to the hard ice cream.

  • You're seriously worried about E. Coli in your frozen yogurt? Do you also cover your mattress and sofa in plastic sheeting? Lighten up--you might even end up living longer!

  • I have to say, I worked at a TCBY in high school and those froyo machines were DISGUSTING. We were directed to empty the machines at night, melt down the unpurchased froyo, and recycle it the next day. And the next. And the next. It would have been entirely possible for your froyo to have a melange of several weeks of froyo.

Of course, this says nothing about conditions or practices at any establishment here in the slope. I, for one, have eaten at Yogomonster, Oko and Culture and found them all good (esp, Oko and Culture).

This site has made my week. Thank you.

  • Regarding "white whine", I don't see anyone on this forum proposing ways to address world hunger or global warming. As far as I've been able to tell, it serves to announce events and air opinions about local businesses, including warnings about questionable practices. I don't see how that's particularly white or whining. Yogo Monster completely changed its way of doing business, from serving customers to self-service without supervision. What I observed was pretty disgusting so I shared my observations with fellow Brooklynians.

  • It's funny, that's all.
