car owners---
hey all,
this is my 1st post, but i've been reading the boards from the getgo. anyway- yesterday i saw something that made me curious & suspicious, so i figured you guys here could help.
i was out walking my dog on 6th avenue & a traffic cop slinked by. she looked both ways like she was looking out for something. then she took her "ticket machine" & scanned the id in a car that was parked perfectly....nowhere near a hydrant, close enough to the curb, no parking rules yesterday, etc....she scanned the id in the windshield (it was a ny state licensed car), looked at what it said, then proceeded to write a ticket.
i'd never seen this before & the car looked like it was parked perfectly....anyone know what was going on? after that, she took off quickly & walked around the corner. god knows what she was up to, but it looked like she just needed to write more tickets that day.
pretty scary, especially since i park in the neighborhood all the time.
anyone have any insight?
thanks in advance!

they do that sometimes to get in their quota. cause sometimes people dont have the time to fight them tickets. few times i paid cause i dont have the time. other times i fight them no matter what. its a very common pratice among the ticket maids.

Well, that's just fantastic news given that we decided to try out a month of street parking!
-
Could've been an expired registration. I got ticketed for that about a month ago, but managed to get it reduced by asking for an online hearing.

Could have been too close to a hydrant - most people leave 6 feet or so, but the law says you must leave 15', which no one ever does.

My money's on expired registration. I don't know how they do it, but they seem to bust those within hours of the expiry.

Yavel is probably right. They can ticket you for an expired registration or expired inspection. The inspection tickets are color coded, so I think it is pretty easy to spot an expired one.

Sorry, that was me! -

i have to agree, they got me once cause i totally forgot about it. and bam next day when it expired. i got a ticket. they are very good at catching those things. -
I rarely use my car and didn't realize that my inspection AND registration would expire when I was on vacation one year.
I came home to $550 in tickets on my car. Yep, you read that correctly.......$55 per ticket .....2 tickets/day (inspection and registration), 5 days that I was gone = $550
I may have started crying (I blocked it from my memory) right on the street.
I went to court and told the judge the truth - I rarely use my car, went on vacation and came back to all of those tickets. Didn't intend to let it expire, blah blah blah.
She reduced it to $110 - one ticket for the registration, one for the inspection, which I think was fair.
Also called the cop "a wee bit ticket happy". -

Just remember to keep your registration and inspection up-to-date.

There's a lot of information on the bar code and the computer scramble on your registration sticker and inspection sticker.
On could be quite "legally" parked, but if your stickers are out of date, it's your ass - and your fault.
Thy bureaucracy is the NY STate DMV. -
When I was a kid, my mother spied on a cop sticking tickets on perfectly parked and registered cars. She eventually popped out from behind some trees and yelled at him. He promptly removed the tickets.
