i'm fascinated that the CH riots occured on washington avenue - i always assumed these occurred deeper within CH. i wonde if the distinction between PH and CH can be traced to that timeframe.
    It is interesting.
Still, we have yet to find any source from when Prospect Heights clearly existed as a neighborhood that describes any other boundaries than the ones above. Other than real estate agents with a clear conflict of interest.
  • ... and my ancient proprietary lease ;) i'll see if i can scan a page.

Yeah, but it doesn't look like Prospect Height was widely even recognized as a neighborhood at that point, judging by its absence from the WPA guide. The concept of what the neighborhood was and where its boundaries were had to have been unclear to the city surveyer.
We have to find some grad student to make this his/her thesis and really dig into the original city documents regarding the policies for city surveyers and whether there were actually any rules guiding these neighborhood designations.
Maybe we could have another raffle at the next DH happy hour to raise money to fund such a study.
  • hehe, ok. i'll shut up now.
  • Alright, I take it all back.

Here is a link to a current map from the official NYC goverment site.

    http://www.nyc.gov/html/dcp/html/neighbor/neighl.html

Although the map is poorly labeled, the Prospect Heights label on it clearly extends well past Washington.

Incidentally, if you click on the community board 8 link at the bottom, you get a pdf with tons of cool stats and info about local services that are available.

Now I really owe you a beer, Ana.log!
  • Woohoo!

You know, it's funny, but I've looked at those maps a long time ago and had forgotten they existed.
  • You live where you live. What does it matter the exact name of the area. Don't be ashamed by Crown Heights. Its got nicer homes and cheaper rent.
  • Crown Heights received its name for being once the crown jewel of the borough of Brooklyn.
Architecturally, some of that jewel still exists.
    Demographically, I don't think so.
The German immigrants, that resided there over a century ago had impecable taste.
    They still do: BMW, Mercedes
  • Sorry, Guest, you've been misinformed. Crown Heights recieved its name because from the Flatlands the hills resemble a crown. Prior to its present moniker, the neighborhood was named Crow Hill because murders of crow made the area their home.
  • If you click on the PDF in that nifty map above, the more detailed map inside seems to indicate fairly clearly that Prospect Heights extends all the way to Rogers Ave. But I think you'd be hard-pressed to find anyone other than real-estate agents that actually considers that to be true!

Good point. It is an official City of New York document though.
  • Subject: Community Districts?

I am confused. Why does nyc.gov list our neighborhood as Community District 8 while Gotham Gazette lists it as Community District 35?

    http://www.gothamgazette.com/community/35/map
    http://www.nyc.gov/html/dcp/html/neighbor/neighl.html

    Yo no se.
  • Actually, that's Community Board 8: http://www.brooklyncb8.org/

We are in District 35. So both are correct.
  • ah... gracias! :D
  • When I lived in the area we called it "Crowinfla" (Crown Heights, Wingate, Flatbush)
  • CroProBo for the border dwellers
  • DLWS, we are also neighbors!! Well, across the street neighbors anyhow, I'm in the row of brownstones next to it. Another person on this board, arielb I think is her name (?) is on this block too. I wonder if I see you all walking to work every day....
  • I live between Grand & Classon and prefer saying I live in Crown Heights. When I moved in last year, my realtor said it was Prospect Heights, but people from PH kept correcting me telling me that Washington was the divider. Since they were so snobby about it, I decided I'd rather live in CH anyway!

Regardless, my friends and I call PH, CH, Ft Greene & Clinton Hill: THE KITCHEN. (It all started from a misunderstanding, but has since stuck.)

So there - we're all in the Kitchen, so enjoy.
  • BklynGuy,

Care to elaborate? That sounds like a story worth telling.

If it's any consolation, I live near Vanderbilt, but consider Prospect Heights to end at Franklin Avenue. I notice that people tend to get hot under the collar about neighborhood boundaries. Try using the term "Greenwood Heights" and see how long you live in this town.

Regarding ideas for neighborhood names, the possibilities are endless. Franklin Heights, Classon Hill, Bergen Manor. Or one could simply pick certain letters from "Crown Heights", and come up with something short that packs a wallop. Like HighCrow or CowShit.
  • Subject: The debate

I live on President and received info from the city calling the area Prospect Heights. The post office calls where I life Prospect Lefferts Gardens and my neighbors say Crown Heights. Those who live in the 11213 zip consider themselves the real Crown Heights and tell those of us who live in 11225 that we are in Prospect Heights (as we share the zip with PH area).

Prospect Heights is 11238. I think I'd consider that Prospect Lefferts Garden for sure.

and 11217, that's my zip anyway.

My zip is 11238 and I live between Grand and Classon on Prospect. Go figure.
  • Uh, I'm in 11238 too and definitely in Crown Heights (Park between Classon and Franklin). I don't think zip codes are going to put this question to bed.
  • The big building on Atlantic and Carlton (Atlantic Terminal) is also 11238 and that is supposed to be Fort Greene.
  • I just hope they don't start combining Crown Heights and Prospect Heights as ProCroHei.
  • Tribeparslchi: The Triangle between Park Slope and Crown Heights.
  • Subject: I like calling Crown Heights Crown Heights

The feeling a name invokes is related to the associations of each individual. To many, Crown Heights has a stigma attached by the infamous riot. Corcoran doesn't list it. To find properties on their website you have to select 'other Brooklyn'. Someday when all of Crown Heights is prettied up, the name will invoke feelings of comfort, charm and community for all its residents and those who merely admire its stately streets and grand architecture.

Crown Heights doen't need an acronym. Call it what it is.

The only alternative I like is 'The Heights of Crown'
  • Subject: I love Crown Heights

I have determined that I live in Crown Heights regardless of all this nonsense talk. I am in 11225, near Empire & Bedford. I have lived in Williamsburg for years & years and when I tell people I live in Crown Heights, they get a glazed confused looked. I like that. I have great Carribean neighbors and the Hasidic are a nice touch. I am so happy to be free of the hipsters in Williamsburg!
