After School Crime — Brooklynian

After School Crime

New to the neighborhood (about 6 months), but I've noticed what seems to be a legitimate after school crime problem here. Recent (anecdotal) examples include a gun point mugging near Underhill a couple of days ago, a brazen snatch and grab at Blue Marble yesterday afternoon and multiple cell phone/ipod snatches that seem to happen constantly, specifically near the subway. The common denominator is always "teen-agers" and "afternoon".

Seems a little visible police presence would go a long way in deterring these kids yet I never see cops patrolling.

Anyway, not expecting some big answers but thought I'd bring it up as it coincided with the recent reports of crime on the rise in NYC.

  • welcome el syd!

mods, please move this post to Prospect Heights. Thanks

  • This isn't uncommon near the subway entrances - if you do a search of the boards, you'll see a history of muggings/snatch & runs, particularly around the 7th Ave B/Q station. Probably the best thing that you can do is to not be oblivious of your surroundings. Based on the last 8 years, I wouldn't count on the 77th devoting any manpower to a problem that is (mostly) solved by awareness.

  • I'm not sure what pct they are from, but I usually see a cop at the Eastern Parkway-Museum stop right after school is out.

Ask and you shall receive

  • Not to worry, this after school crime will stop as soon as summer recess begins.

  • Ah, summer.

...when crime happens more frequently during all hours.

  • thugs view the area as rich mans area and its on the way home to another hood mostly. in nyc class and race are closely bound where people live.

alot of the poor kids go to school outside of their hoods legacy of busing. So on the way home thugs not the good kids off course, see the rich folks are easy pickings for a mugging.
