Annoying Beeping Sound in Vinegar Hill/Dumbo@ Gold and Front — Brooklynian

Annoying Beeping Sound in Vinegar Hill/Dumbo@ Gold and Front

I live at 99 Gold and there is a really annoying beeping sound that has been ringing for almost a month now 24/7. Had anyone else heard it in the neighborhood or at 99 Gold?

It could be coming from the school, the projects I don't know. It is driving us crazy. Called 311 and they were useless. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

  • If it's the sound that's kind of like an alarm (smoke, CO) when batteries are low (beep every few seconds), we just had that for two days. 311 was useless, but one neighbor narrowed it down to two houses (owners were out of town) and just called 911 about a possible CO leak and that did the trick. NYFD showed up, went through another house and climbed in an open window in the back and disconnected the alarm. Sanity was restored.

  • Thank you for the response. I called 311 and you are right they are USELESS. I am in a condo so it is hard to tell if the sound is coming from an apt above me or from buildings near us.

We are near a school and the Farragut Houses. I am thinking it may be coming from one of those. No idea if or how the cops will be able to investigate the beeping aside from visiting my apt. I'd hate to call the cops for this but it is really driving us insane.

  • You might try putting some signs up on the doors of your and neighboring buildings asking for anyone who knows where (or has a good idea where) the beeping is coming from to either report it or contact you so you can report it.

People on our block actually went to stay with friends/family to get away from it. The alarms are made to be loud enough to wake the dead (aka heavy sleepers or people slipping into a CO slumber). I don't know how you've put up with it for this long if it's anything like what we had--shutting the windows did not help.

The 311 call by one neighbor got the cops out but since nobody could locate it at that point (we couldn't even narrow down to which side of the block), it was a waste. The firemen didn't seem upset about the call at all--maybe they were glad it wasn't something where people actually got hurt but that they could help.
