Collective Minds Needed. — Brooklynian

Collective Minds Needed.

I am currently in the job market as I lost my job about 3 months ago. I applied for a job at a major company (will not say the name for obvious reasons, but it is a big investment bank). An HR rep got back to me one business day after I applied and we set up a phone interview for the following day where essentially they were going to pre-screen me. I was well prepared with my answers covering my entire career and I got the phone call the next day at the scheduled time for the interview. The HR recruiter was pleasant and the call lasted about 20 minutes. I was calm, composed and very concise and smart with my answers. The only problem I had with the call is that I was not given an opportunity to ask any questions of my own. The HR rep told me it will take a few business days to get back to me. It has been approximately 8 days (however 3 of those days are a weekend and a holiday, so it has been 5 business days) and I have not heard back from the recruiter. I have their contact information.

My questions are:

1- Will I ever hear back from the company?

2- should I contact the recruiter and ask where I stand? (somehow I feel like this is badgering)

Need some outside insight on this.

  • Having just completed a job hunt (albeit in a different industry), I have the following to report:

I had 3 phone interviews, 5 first interviews and 2 second interviews with about 7 firms over a 3 month period.

    1. If I was not selected to move forward after a phone interview, they never let me know.

    2. If I was not selected to move forward after an in person interview, they let me know half the time.

    3. If I was not selected after a second interview, they let me know. Thankfully, I only got one rejection after a second interview ...the other one was an offer.

I consider it slightly rude (but understandable) to not let someone know that they are not moving forward after a phone interview. (they didn't have to dress up or take a long lunch)

I consider it rude to not let someone know they are not moving forward after an interview (they dressed up, and took a long lunch)

I consider it very rude to not let someone know they are not moving forward after a second interview (they dressed up twice, and likely faked a doctors appt).

  • Thanks, now I have some idea of where I stand, basing it on your analysis.I thought the may at least contact me and inform me that they are moving forward with other candidates. I would respect that.

    Congratulations on your job offer.

  • Unfortunately it's the old, "don't call us, we'll call you." Many companies don't have the courtesy to advise you that you're out of the running and even if at present you're not, they're probably interviewing countless candidates. Years ago you might be the only person applying for a position, now even entry level jobs have more applicants than they need. I wish you all the best of luck and hopefully the day will come when you will be able to turn down job offers because you'll be in a better position. Give it a week or two. If nothing comes about so be it but in the meantime keep looking.

  • Thanks Pragmatic guy. Makes me feel like dog turd thinking about what I have to go through. But I am still fighting, every general has a battle plan and I am sticking to mine.

  • BTW Have another phone interview this week. Wish me luck people.
