Finally got rid of my verizon dsl and got sprint 4g — Brooklynian

Finally got rid of my verizon dsl and got sprint 4g

Shout out to sprint 4g. it doesn't test so well on speed test, but when downloading large files it speeds to about 12-14 mbps. on test it shows about 5mbps. but test doesn't put in lag time etc.. when downloading large files its speedy as hell.

I got their mifi called overdrive pro, I also gonna get rid of my cell internets service soon. don't need that either.

since i take my 4 g to go with me. I use it for both home connection and cell internets. Since it has built in wifi and sprint is the only company that doesn't limit your 4g downloads. they do limit your 3g downloads. 4g is unlimited unlike other services.

only reason they limit their 3g is cause of their prepaid program virgin mobile which offers 3g is much cheaper for their 3g mifi. (4g is better lol)

also if you get the 4g stick for sprint its 10 bucks cheaper a month but no wifi built in :p.

all other broadband services are going the way of limiting their broadband download limit. latest has been at&t and verizon in some services.

this month cycle i did about over 100 gigs of downloading.

only reason I did not get rid of my cell internets is lazy ass friend is on my family plan. she needs the cheap ass legacy 10 bucks a month internets i have. Next month hopefully she'll take over my internet/cell plan and i'll get my new service. I'm not on any contract. good to have legacy stuff sometimes.

  • I'm not the most tech savvy person sometimes, so I only got half of what you wrote here. I don't play computer games or download tons of stuff on my laptop. I have TWarner and it sucks. I'm looking for a better internet provider that is fast! Is this only good if you are a heavy downloadin'person?

You say you can take it anywhere? That would be cool....

  • How much does it cost?

    Are there ever coverage/connect-ability issues?

For example, AT&T's coverage in NYC (and elsewhere) is way worse than it should be.

  • 49.99 for their usb stick (I got this briefly and decided on their slightly more expensive mifi instead) its 4g unlimited and works so very well in nyc :p. I haven't travel outside of nyc. I'm a home body.

I got this one 59.99 a month for unlimited 4g and and only 3 gigs of 3g if you decide to use their 3g service.

I set my device to do 4g only :p.

My device is Sierra Wireless Overdrive Pro 3G/4G Mobile Hotspot

(other device available is the MiFi® 3G/4G Mobile Hotspot by Novatel Wireless, at the time of my purchase was the same price, now slightly more) only reason i got this vs stick is has built in wifi supports i think 8 devices, i could use my tablet and cell phone on the go with me. I just unplug my overdrive from outlet and put the battery in, this way my battery wouldn't be charging all the time(not really meant to be use like this lol), since its on almost 24/7. I take the cord to go with me in case i'm stuck in a building for more than 4 hours. battery doesn't last that long. you can get replacement batteries for 10 bucks. but I rarely use battery. i always use it on a outlet.

if you are curious, just go buy any of the 3 used, this way you don't have to sign up for their 2 years contract. when used its fairly cheap to be had on ebay.

its really fast on most things, lag is normally around 50+ms but during busy times of the day is hovers around 100+ms barely noticeable. it really flies when you download huge files. I should go outside of nyc to test it out lol. But i don't travel. so if you're here in nyc works great.

I get 60% signal strength. at home unless i stick the unit outside of my window which goes up to 80%. good thing to invest in is a usb extension cord :p. I only stick it out of the window as a test to see what better signal i get lol. other wise stays inside my room. I surf down stairs with my tablet, while my mifi stays up stairs. you could adjust their wifi signal strength on the device.

the mifi is like any wifi device you give it a network name or stay with its default name. and give it a password so you could log in with other devices. also tell it how many devices can connect to it at one time. i set it to be 1. cause i'm the only one using it and i'm paranoid!!

if you don't use your internets outside of the home this is pretty expensive vs a landline of similar speeds. but if you like me need it outside of the home, worth the money. don't need my cell phone internets any more.

oh both mifis are about the size of a small cell phone. its like carrying around another phone.

if i miss anything let me know :p.

  • Hmmmm.

I suspect that these devices will start out great, but as more people get them will begin to suck due to overtaxed bandwidth issues.

If only bandwidth would keep up with growing demand.

  • another reason i got this is to lock in on the unlimited 4g :p. cause most companies are limiting their download data amounts. its a huge trend among the broadband companies. once you're a legacy/grandfather in you're fine.

  • rant about verizon, they are suppose to give me a refund.

I always had bell atlantic dsl they took money out of my credit card automatically each month and never gotten a paper bill. so when i called to cancel. they ask me for account numbers and some stupid number on their paper bill. I try to explain to them I never have ever gotten one and was one of the first dsl clients. hell i sign up for dsl when they were doing test runs etc... sign up for their service when they first feature it in some stupid tech show thing way back in the day.

anyway long story short took many different service reps try to get them to cancel service. and when they did, i still got charge automatically. they said they were going to send a check to me. still haven't' gotten a check. and I better not get charge again tomorrow. its the due date for my auto bills.

I'm gonna put a foot up their asses if i get charge tomorrow.

You know a service provider is bad when someone knows, off the top of their head, the date that their contract/ETF ends

    - 6/22 can't get here soon enough, and then it's adios AT&T.
