Does anyone know of someone or a reputable agency that deals with home health care particularly someone who specializes with someone with alzheimers?

I did try Visiting nurse and they are clueless when it comes to alzheimers and not to mention ive had some bad experiences with them over the years. Surpisingly enough alzheimers.org doesnt have anyone else

  • I found VNS and the Alzheimers Association totally useless when it came to the practical nitty gritty side of caring for someone with demetia.

Are you looking for a home care aide or home visits to visit and supervise existing care?

  • If you have resources, you should look into the services of a Geriatric Care Manager.

Park Slope Geriatric Day Center operates programs for folks with Alzheimers, including Liza's Place.

    ...I'd call them. http://www.psgdc.org/

    ...they'll know all about it.

  • i will definately check out PSGDC, and thanks for the reply Whynot31

Reader I have a mother who is well into her eighties that has alzheimers and needs a female assistant particularly with bathroom needs..The original aide i have only comes in a few hours per day and i need more coverage. Im looking to have help for her about 14 hours per day

  • Did you ask your existing caregiver if she has any cousins, friends etc that can do the job? This sometimes works and seems to minimize conflicts over scheduling and workload.

If she has a doctor that is involved that has a geriatric practice, the office staff may know of someone who needs to pick up hours.

My initial caregiver for my mom was through the Italian Guardians Society years ago. My Mom's needs quickly overtook what that caregiver could do, but I got names from her of ladies in her church that were more suitable.

Try to define to yourself what you need before you ask or interview, the personality of the new aide may depend on the stage of Alzheimers you are dealing with. If your mom is just repetitive and vague you may want someone sweet and soothing, but if she is agressive and wandering you will need to ask for someone that has a tougher skin and a higher level of experience.
