Question on safety
Hi
I am looking to move into Brooklyn and have been looking at apartments mainly north of prospect park, below Atlantic, west of Rogers, and east of Vanderbilt and some a little outside those boundaries. I was wonerding if there are any areas to avoid, I will be living with all young females unfamiliar to the area so I want to make sure we are safe.
Thanks! I appreciate any insight
(even other safe/cheap places to live!)

If you are looking to move into Park Slope I would advise against it. We are going through a difficult time ever since the down turn of the economy. It has suddenly become hip in the area to come to our community to rob steal or vandalize our property. Frankly, you are better off moving into lower Manhattan if you can afford it. Some of us are currently putting together a tenant patrol of sorts in order to combat the problem. It is a dark time in our neighborhood and I can not honestly recommend anyone moving in until we bring civility to these streets.

in a economic down turn it happens every where, i guess you haven't been noticing that. not just in park slope, also in lower manhattan where you are suggesting.
the area op is looking at is crown heights, walk around the area the time you get home from work and the times you'll be home walking around to shop. see how you feel.

Poca, it sounds like of like your looking in Crown Heights and Prospect Heights, both of which are good areas, imo. AW is right--it's best if you can visit the areas where you are looking first to decide if *you* feel safe. You can find crime anywhere, but those areas are far better than some other parts of Brooklyn, and probably less so than others. I live in Park Slope and can say to just ignore Toxic--I love it here even though I don't have/want kids (but I'm also an old lady at heart who loves the quiet and tons of food).
If you are searching for a place long distance, be careful of scams (asking for money order deposits, etc.) and also consider a short-term lease or sublet. We moved to Brooklyn from far away and instead of choosing a place with a year+ lease via the interwebs, we chose a 5 week sublet in one area we were considering. That allowed us to really explore lots of places and go roam around places day AND night to make sure we felt safe and liked the blocks around potential apartments (which you can do easily if you already live in NYC) before signing a year long lease.
The vibe of can vary widely block by block over there, so either peruse the PH and CH archives here or just come here to ask about specific spots.
I also like Windsor Terrace (mellow) and Prospect-Lefferts Gardens areas as well if you're looking for more spaces/amenities over bars/shops for your money.

Obviously you do not know what you are talking about. Seems like you are intent in living in your very own personal snow globe complete with illusions of grandeur.
Get out your plastic bubble and dare to walk down in Manhattan and you will see how everyone is walking around without looking over their shoulder. At least the coppers down there work in conjunction with the community to keep it safe. Park Slope is heading down a toilet swirl and if we do nothing about it it will look like Detroit.
Do yourself a favor and join the Tenant watch...DO SOMETIME FOR A CHANGE INSTEAD OF BEING A CLUELESS PRAGMATIST COMPLAINER!!

its only you. i suspect you don't want more people to move in from Manhattan and would write stuff to discourage more of them LOL. there is alot of "native" crabby people who don't want more people.
I grew up in Brooklyn in the 80's with the crack. I know bad, i been in more muggings than you'll ever experience. park slope is heaven billion virgins compare to Detroit hell. seriously only person who is fooled is yourself.
Lower Manhattan can be an empty place after midnight, and this year it’s also a more dangerous one. Violent crimes like rape and assault are on the rise, according to the most recent NYPD statistics, as of May 29.
http://www.metro.us/newyork/local/article/885152--crime-on-the-rise-in-lower-manhattanWednesday, police say a man attacked and sexually assaulted a 23-year-old woman just steps away from the tourist-laden South Street Seaport. The man stalked the woman as she walked along the darkened streets at about 2:30 a.m. and attacked her near Fulton and Cliff streets, police said. He then escaped through Gold Street.
Rape and other crimes are happening more frequently this year than last in the three precincts below Houston Street.
In the First Precinct, which spans the Financial District, three rapes have been reported to the NYPD so far this year. Last year there were none. In that precinct, which includes City Hall and the Seaport, robberies are up 18 percent and felony assaults up 35 percent.
“I wouldn’t come home late by myself,” said downtown resident Lea, who lives across the street from Fulton and Cliff streets.
Nina Londono, 26, who served in Iraq and just moved to the Bronx, said the crime puts her on edge. “That’s very surprising” she said, when hearing of the sex attack. “In my neighborhood, I wouldn’t be surprised, but here ... it’s crazy.”

Honestly the more I read from this fool armchair the more I feel like vomiting. So if you read his diatribe he is basically saying that he is a more experienced Brooklynite because he has been a successful victim multiple times....WOW! If you dared to stand up for your community for a change then you would not have to hide behind the self anointed, lack luster, moniker of "PROFESSIONAL VICTIM".
Wake up......Park Slope is changing for the worse and it is time for the community to adapt in order to keep its social integrity intact.
Grow a set already and join something that is greater than yourself.

lol they'll agree

When I moved from Park Slope to Prospct Lefferts Gardens in 1974 my new neighborhood was MUCH safer than the Slope, but the neighborhood across the park has improved over the eights and years to the point where it's every bit as safe as Crown Heights and PLG :-)
-
Hmm--my new tablet seems to add words--I don't know where the "eights and" in my last post came from

With all this crime, I think I'll look in to buying a brownstone, property values must be dropping like crazy, right?
-
Just be careful, because a lot of scumbag brokers try to say that they have a wonderful apartment in
"Gowanus" or "Near Methodist Hospital" or "South Boerum", when it's really in PPS (Prime Park Slope). Then the poor slob plunks down a hefty deposit on a $3450 a month brownstone (suckered in by the dirt cheap price), and they find they are living in the New Haven of Brooklyn.
-
Who knew there wew so many PS haters out there?
-
lol they are are coming out of the wood work. or just jealous.
-
Well, we did once have a 7 page thread on the topic of Why People Hate Park Slope.
The results were inconclusive.
-
where are these dirt cheap brownstones again?
-
The dirt cheap brownstones are all over; all you need to find them is a time machine set fo 40 years ago :-)

I am going to filter through all the hate rant and arguing and answer your question, Poca.
As a single girl, I have lived in this neighborhood for some 7 years. Some days are better then others. I do feel that with some cultures, they do not have a concept of female equality, but overall this neighborhood has improved greatly over the past few years.
The police are a pretty active presence in the neighborhood. There are still crimes, but that depends on your lifestyle. If you stay away from the drama and hang out mostly in other areas or the city, you should be good.
Closer to Vanderbilt is much nicer then where I live in my opinion. A bit more expensive as well.

"Gowanus" or "Near Methodist Hospital" or "South Boerum", when it's really in PPS (Prime Park Slope).
hahahaha

poca1088, Considering the area you are inquiring about is not Park Slope, you can ignore all the bizarre fear-mongering happening above. Your comfort in this area will depend largely on what building on what block you end up on, but for the most part I consider it fine.
For whatever reason, it's looking like a lot of parties go down on St. John's place, so think about that if you and the ladies ever need get up early for a standard job.
I would also consider just how unfamiliar the females mentioned are? Are they coming from Manhattan? Some other urban area in this country? Or the rolling green hills of Vermont? It can be the safest area in the world, but if you're not used to the city at all, it could be disconcerting for the ladies (I am one myself, by the way). If you are disconcerted or acting fearful, I tend to think that's a bit of an invitation to be victimized, but I could be playing "Blame the Victim" here.
It really would be best to pick a nice hot night and then stroll the area. You'll find spots that seem fine and others where there seems to be an active night-street life that you may want to avoid if you need to be up for a regular job.
If you're willing to travel a little further away from Manhattan, there are a number of really nice, mfamily oriented, and safe(r) neighborhoods that can be even cheaper than Crown Heights and a lot cheaper than Prospect Heights. Bensonhurt, Windsor Terrace, Kings Highway, Bay Ridge etc.

The rectangle formed by Vanderbilt, EP, Rogers and Atlantic is a big one.
