Packing Peanuts in the 'hood? — Brooklynian

Packing Peanuts in the 'hood?

Hello all where do you think I could find styrofoam packing peanuts in the neighborhood? I would love if someone might give them to me for free. But I would also pay for them.

I am making a container garden and need the peanuts for drainage.

Thanks for any and all suggestions.

  • There is a storage place on Empire Blvd just east of Washington that sells packing peanuts.

A closer to home option might be to stop in one of the 99 cent stores and see if they have any left over from deliveries that they would be willing to sell/give you.

  • Lincoln Postal on Lincoln and Classon has peanuts and other packing material. Also Away We Go Postal on Washington and Sterling by Tom's.

  • make shure they are not the melting kind. pea gravel works better. construction supply on franklin + st,marks. old screen under gravel makes sure it doesnt block drainage holes.

  • Thanks for all the recs. I didnt know about Lincoln Postal so will check it out grantsquare.

Tsarina the reason I didnt want to use pea gravel is because I would have to lug it home and would have to buy alot plus it making heavier containers. But given that there is one so close... Anyway do you know how the construction place prices the gravel?

  • Are you going to grow any edibles in the container garden? If so, it might be worth getting the pea gravel delivered from a garden supply store. Not that there *necessarily* are impurities in construction gravel, just that they would not need to control for that. I am pretty sure that the Kings County Nurseries has this in stock and will deliver it. They’re on New York Ave.

  • I gotta little red wagon you can borrow, and an even bigger gardening wagon. they sell it by the debris bag full. If you are concerned regarding dust on it just hose it down. I've used it in my containers. Infact, Got some in the back yard if you want to cart it to your house. I'm between Rogers & Nostrand on st. marks.

is it $3 - 5 dollars a bag? very cheap.

  • I am not planning on planting edibles (except for herbs this season) so I think it should be okay. I havent been to Kings County Nursery I am planning on going Friday. I want to see what their selection of perennials is but their delivery charge is pretty steep. Home Depot has a crappy selection of perennials. Whoever has better and cheaper plants I will buy there and just take a cab home since I have lots of potting soil to buy too.

Thank so much for the offer tsarina. I will check out the place on franklin and st marks and then PM you if needed. Since I will be moving my containers around I am still thinking lighter is best.

  • If you need the styrofoam kind, I have plenty here I would love to get rid of. Just shoot me an email & let me know.
