Meeting on street crime surge
Council Member James has called a meeting to address the recent increase in street crime in Prospect Heights.
Over the last several weeks, more than a dozen residents of Prospect Heights have been victims of robbery for their iphones, laptops and wallets. All of the crimes have occurred on the street or in local cafes, some at knife or gunpoint, and most of them in the afternoon. A number of the robberies have been surprisingly brazen - with the perpetrators entering cafes to snatch away laptops right out of the hands of their owners.
Deputy Inspector James Capozzi, the Commanding Officer of the 77th Precinct, will be there to discuss police response and what steps the community can take to protect itself.
Thursday, June 30
7 pm
PS 9 - corner of Underhill and St. Marks Avenue
Sponsored by Council Member Letitia James and the Prospect Heights Neighborhood Development Council

Seems like a simple increase in Police presence, specifically during the afternoons when the kids are out being let out of school, would go a long way towards stamping out the recent surge. A certain amount of "2am muggings" are just a fact of life, it would seem.
-
Ah, but school will soon be out for the summer, and the neighborhood often has more problems then.
I like that Tish is having a meeting on the subject.
There is a lot people can do to cooperate with the police, and help them in their efforts.
-
beware, prospect heights
lipsky gang is on the loose
they will rob you blind

-
Prospect Heights is the first neighborhood I've lived in where I actually see cops walking around.
Danaeo, I'd like to hear about more of these thefts, and how they've been unusual from the typical grab-n-go iPhone theft that's pretty common. I feel like I've heard about a couple of brazen thefts on Washington Avenue. Like el syd said, that could be solved by more police presence, including that police eye-in-the-sky thing that lots of people found too creepy.

His name is Elvio Capocci.
-
My apologies to Deputy Inspector Capocci for botching his name.
There have been many iPod thefts recently, which is not new for the neighborhood. There have also been a number a laptop thefts where people have entered cafes and have ripped the laptop from the hands of its owner. Another guy stands at the door and holds it open for the thief running out of the store.

Our building was broken in to on Tuesday, and our upstair neighbor's apartment was burglarized. Apparently, it happen at a time that I was probably home, which bothers me in a number of ways.
-
I was robbed 3 weeks ago. The young thugs pushed me to the ground and stole my Ipod and cellphone. Although I did not resist that did not stop them from pinning me to the ground with their feet as they rifled through my purse. A quick visit to the chiropractor the next day alleviated the pain to my lower lumbar area. It is getting ridiculous around here. Something must be done soon.
-
Karl-
We seem to have a preference for non-white collar crime today
PH and Lillith-
Did you report these incidents to the police? [Lillith, glad you are ok]Danaeo-
I know the incidents you discuss are known to them, because PH Patch published info from the police blotter.Sadly PH has always had its share of crime.
Although crime made huge drops between 2000 and 2010, it should be interesting to see if we are actually seeing more crime.
....or the same amount of crime talked about more.
...or just the regular summer uptick.
Iphones and other electronic equipment are a favorite target. The trick is balancing fact vs. anxiety, vs complete internet rumors.
I.E. While recognizing that crime does happen, folks should not overreact and stay in their apartment all the time. ...have excellent summers.

Whynot, I did not report the incident to the authorities because these individuals seemed to be teenagers. I did not feel comfortable being responsible for putting them in a judicial system that is ultimately biased against the black youth of this country/state/city. They say "Justice" is blind but when it comes to those who are financially or socially less fortunate "Justice" tends to peak and railroad them. I know some will say I am wrong but this is a personal choice. These urban kids do not get a fare break so far be it for me to put another nail in their coffins. I say let them keep the Ipod and Cellphone.
-
BrookFetish, this occurred 3 weeks ago near 1st street and Prospect Park. It was about 7-8 pm. I was foolish enough to be walking with my Ipod buds on oblivious to my surroundings. Some would say I was the perfect victim. Phooey on me.
-
A convenient explanation.
-
What is convenient about it?
-
You complain and yet you don't call the cops? =DB :-k
All this crime in PH, damn you guys are starting to sound like Park Slope

-
Mama-
Lillith says her crime happened in PS, so don't make her a PH person.Me thinks that even Park Slope is not ready to embrace her.
...which is sad, cause she needs a hug. -
I assure you that this is a difficult decision for me but you only need look to the prison statistics to understand my plight. The majority of the people in prisons and jails in the city are of minority descent. I believe there is something inherently wrong with our judicial system. It is rigged to punish those who are less affluent and to coddle those with the proper resources. Please do not get me wrong and assume that I am for the criminal element. Not so. I made a personal decision regarding these youthful offenders that I take full responsibility for. I am hoping that a larger police presence in our neighborhood will make these youngsters think twice about leading a life of crime.
-
Why would you want a "larger police presence" if you don't want them to arrest those who commit crime?
Silly cat, that is the job of the police.
-
So what you are saying is you are so paralyzed by liberal white guilt that you cant bring yourself to file a police report against a black youth that pushed you down, stood on your neck and stole your phone?
no name calling please - mods
Its the soft racism of lowered expectations that in my opinion does more harm to the african american community than the seemingly overt racism of the justice system.
A person fucking nocked you down and stole from you. Its your duty as a citizen to report it to the police so the perpetrators can be stopped and not have the opportunity to do it to someone else.
Please do brooklyn a favor and move back to where ever it is you came from.

jgregorie, be careful not to fall for the silliness of the silly cat.
The cat is not real. He is lonely and just needs a hug.

Chill with the cursing, name calling, and aggression. The primary rule of this site is: be nice.
This is your warning, thanks.

I have to say though, there is a point here. If you do not report crime how can police and the city know where there is crime and build statistics, pinpoint areas needing more police presence. How can you protect your neighbors if you "don't snitch."
Just saying.
-
I am not asking you to understand but to instead respect my decision. These youngsters still have a chance to make a course correction in their lives. This, by all means, does not mean I would not hesitate to call the police and prosecute a person who was a career criminal. I chose to show these youths mercy but only because I choose to respect their future decisions. We all make mistakes when we are young. If it makes the people of this forum more comfortable I will report the next incident to the police if this will stop you from judging my actions.
-
I would add to the discussion that the next young woman listening to her iPod/iPhone at or near the corner of 1st Street and Prospect Park, and viciously mugged by the guys to whom you just gave a "free get out of jail card", might also take issue with your "personal decision".
She might in fact be very unhappy that someone knew there were muggers about who did not bother alerting the authorities to the risk.
-
Mama-
I totally agree, and believe even the sillycat agrees with us. The cat is just looking to befriend those who dislike the misguided bleeding hearts, by pretending to be a bleeding heart. It sorta makes sense.Sillycat, we love you just that way you are. There is no need to pretend you turn the other cheek.
P.S. Readers who are genuinely guilt ridden don't have to call the police, we will call for you. We always have.
-
I would like to be nice and say that I love the big headed kitty avatar. Big headed cats need their heads scratched very much.
As for the thread about street crime- my future decisions about theft were inspired by my parents who, upon learning that I had picked up and not returned a nickel to my friends in kindergarten, marched me over to said friends house and made me apologize to my friend and her parents. After this mortifying experience, I felt that it just wasnt worth stealing.
How can we deprived those poor youths from an experience that may just change their lives for the better? How are they going to realize that stealing isnt worth it? -
Big headed cats need attention, and love.
-
Tsarina-
We don't have to send people to prison because it is good for them. We can send them to prison because we think it is good for us.
