anybody see what seemed an NYPD surge/mass roll-out down Park Place last night? — Brooklynian

anybody see what seemed an NYPD surge/mass roll-out down Park Place last night?

Let me preface this by saying that if they were chasing someone, fine, no problem.

But if not, that was really weird, annoying and disturbing. It was well into the evening, like maybe 11 p.m.? Again, if this was a mass roll-out: Terrible. These surge drills: They do nothing. In fact, who could prove they deter anything? They're also way too creepily reminiscent of a favorite psyop tool of subjugation of citizenry of any number of malevolent dictatorships, take your pick. And by the way: What message was our neighborhood supposed to take from that loud disturbing show of force? Such a very, very bad, extremely odd idea by whomever decided it was the appropriate thing to do last night.

  • I would like to see the data or evidence that these displays of cops & their expensive toys achieve anything other than an ego boost.

  • Last night I saw the beginning of a chase.

From my window looking out on Fulton Street, a police officer turned his lights on behind a car. The car turned into the bus lane to pass traffic waiting at the light and the police began to pursue. The car got stuck in traffic, cops jumped out, guns drawn and ordered the man out of his car, he cut through traffic when the light turned green and took off up Fulton headed south and east. Over the next few minutes many marked and unmarked police cars and a van flew down Fulton as well.

Perhaps it was the same situation. Perhaps not.

  • I didn't see the surge, but I heard it. One of the cars had some sort of weird sound distorter in addition to the regular siren and they turned it on just as they were coming past Rogers Ave. It seemed to take the siren from a high pitched "Whooop" to a bass sound with a disturbing frequency. Sounded like something they'd use for crowd control during a riot.

I didn't think too much of it, because Park is the block of choice for cops traversing the neighborhood from west to east. It is the block closest to the squadhouse that runs all the way through the precinct (the others dead end at the superblocks)so you always see police heading down it with lights on as they race to get back.

I don't think it was a chase, just returning to the station from whatever drill or public event they were covering (Wasn't the president in town last night? That would explain it.)

  • The new bass-like siren is something they're rolling out in more numbers soon from what I understand. It is to get rid of the excuse that cars with their music turned all the way up can't hear the sirens. With the bass, now drivers will be able to Feel the sirens. It seems like overkill, since aren't all cars required to have rear view mirrors in which they can see flashing lights?

And yeah, the president was in town yesterday.

  • Very thoughtful answers everyone. Thanks. If it was non-emergency or non-perp related, it was too late in the evening to do a noisy, disruptive drill like that.

  • Bass is two octaves lower; they calls it “The Rumbler”

and it’s coming to 5,000 of the NYPD’s 8000 vehicles.

  • I really with the NYPD would start ticketing for not getting out of the way of emergency vehicles.

The selfishness and ignorance is truly staggering, even by NYC driver standards.

  • " The Rumbler " will also help to alert those who are deaf or blind that a potential high-speed vehicle that may run a stop signal is in the area.
