Park Slope - Land of Terrible Bagels

By the way, does anyone know where the Food Co-Op's bagels come from? I've heard Terrace Bagels, but the co-op has a few flavors that I don't think Terrace carries, like whole wheat with poppy seeds or sesame.

I thought the "everything bagel" I got at the Fairway was surprisingly
good! -

Bagel Hole's bagels are good because they are small -- dense and chewy, the way NY bagels should be, not like the hyperinflated catcher's mitts at the places mentioned above. Them's Midwestern-style bagels, yecch.
There's a fairly good bagel place at 5th Avenue and 17th[?] but it's probably as far from you as Terrace Bagels.
Who cares how small they are as long as they are the right texture and taste. Small bagels might be more authentic. It's unlikely Brooklyn's bagel pioneers were eating the super-sized bagels we've accepted as normal size in today's post-"Where's the Beef"-marketing- campaign world. I look very forward to trying Terrace Bagels two at a time if necessary. -

This weekend I got some bagels from Bagel World on 5th near JJ Byrne Park and they were overcooked. I don't like spending 5 hours in line then being abused, so I stay away from the bad bagels at Bageltique.
You would have been better off walking into Key Food and buying Lender's Bagels and throwing them into your toaster.
What is a bagel lover to do? Don't ask me the schlep to Bergen Bagels or Terrace (they are both great, but a car ride away). Any good bagels around here? What are my options? HELP!!! -
linusvanpelt wrote: [quote=Isa]I really like Bagel World, too. Maybe give it another shot.
I was glad it opened because that stretch of 5th Avenue needed a bagel shop, but I'm not sure I've ever talked to anybody who actually liked it (as opposed to, "eh, it's OK if you don't want to walk farther"). Big, spongey, sweet pillow bagels like La Bagel's, except even softer.
Weird, when I went they were exactly unpillowy, they were dense and chewy like I like. Maybe it was a fluke because I only went once. I photographed every bagel in the entire area so that I could blog about them. Because I'm a loser is why. -
the bialys at brooklyn bread in carroll gardens are yum.
lightly toasted w. a little butter, please. -
i buy my bagels from rock and roll bagel in astoria queens. Its a bit of a drive, but worth it.

i think bagels are alot like John Stossel: satisfying, crunchy on the outside, mushy inside, and best served lightly toasted.

I don't understand what constitutes trolling by Mean DooD in this instance. Please explain.

Um, yeah...I don't give a crap one way or another about Stossel, but if we were (are?) willing to tolerate Ernesto "Che" Guevera avatars round these parts, I reckon Stossel's crimes are pretty petty by comparison. But then, Che is sooooo much sexier and Jeebus like...who cares about the executions, really? Plus, he's dead, which is sweet...where dem T-shirts at?
I mean c'mon, Stossel took a serious smackdown for his art - heh, I remember seeing that as a kid and being shocked. In a good way. -
To MeanDood's credit, he has been keeping to the topic of bagels and has not been derailing this thread at all.
The avatar is kind of big though, which compresses the text of the thread into a smaller column. -
Has anyone else tried the mini-bagels at Terrace, or am I the only one? They really are far superior to the regular ones.

Coop bagels come from Terrace. No minis tho . . . -
just came across this rather detailed illustrated comparison of Terrace Bagels v Bagel Hole

The best bagels I've ever eaten were from a place called New York Bagel. It was in Detroit!
