Is Myrtle Express Deli (between Vanderbilt & Clermont) another victim of the gentrification that continues to sweep through Fort Greene & Clinton Hill?

    Heavens no. Us gentrifiers would never imagine stepping into a "deli" with all of the unwashed masses. How gouache! In fact we don't eat, drink, or buy paper-towels either.

    As I was drinking at Rope I noticed this shithole of a deli with it's stained, torn awning. Maybe it has less to do with gentrifiers and more to do with the plethora of both crappy and clean delis within spitting distance.

    It was a victim of the following:

    1. He opened "Obama" Deli with his cousin one block away. (which quickly changed it's name to Habibi?)

    2. He sold it when he couldn't afford to be running two places.

    3. The newer deli (which was nicer and newer - duh), took most of his business.

    I hear he bought another place in a less deli-saturated neighborhood.

    Oh, and I didn't help matters because I won't shop anywhere that doesn't have gold-plated shopping carts.

    Which part was the lie? That there are lots of delis to choose from in the same stretch of Myrtle...one of which is owned by the same guy? (True) That Myrtle Express was run down looking? (also True)

    Can you clarify?

    While sitting in Rope it is not possible to see Myrtle Express' awning.

    There is no need to destroy anything, just only shop at the places that carry products of the quality and selection you desire.

    Those stores that can't attract and keep customers (be them new residents or old), will slowly disappear until the neighborhood changes again.

    The long term residents of all hues are already doing the same thing. It is called competition.
