Not this -- this is next to the dry-cleaners near Lincoln. Although also nice news to hear!

Talked to a worker there, said a restaurant and lounge. Didn't get any details on what type of food.

Winebar.

Supposed to open this weekend, April 9, 2012:

Sounds like a somewhat upscale bar with panni sandwiches....
...has anyone heard when the former location of Chavella's on Classon will re-open?

Im pretty sure i read somewhere that all of the furniture in there is custom made. Should be cool!

I like how the bars are starting to cater toward an older audience as many of the neighborhood bar goers get older.
....I'm seeing quieter, more refined venues, ....not just hamburger joints with beer.

Then when you get really old you just drink at home, maybe even alone

By then, the neighborhood will have changed into something else.

Went tonight. Had 4 beers - all great. Nothing on tap is the usual crap. I had two Utica apricot wheats and my husband had two different beers that were from upstate and Utah - but all interesting brews over 7%. Our tab was $22 and we could pay on card - although you need cash to tip.
Great vibe, cool back room, nice drinks, nice staff, and they put on the Suns game on heir huge projection screen for a couple of Phoenix fans (my husband and I) . Great addition to the neighborhood!!

739 Franklin
This bar seems to be doing ok, but isn't packed even on weekend nights.
It seems to have attracted a pretty loyal following, and might meet my description of a Neighborhood Bar.
Although they promised to serve food when they presented to CB8, they seem to have concluded that is not required by their customer base. One answers to ones customer base far more than the CB.

According to their website, they have food. The one time I had a drink there, there was a little menu on the bar, though that was about 6 months ago.
Did you go recently and notice a lack of food?

I went on Sat night (11/2/2013) and had a faint memory of how people thought (hoped? feared?) this would be an upscale establishment when it first opened.
So, I dusted off this thread and thought "not only is this not a pretentious place, it also isn't a restaurant".
...I did not ask for a menu, so my observation is merely that no one was eating and that its large back room was empty.
-
Yes, agreed that it is certainly not a "restaurant", regardless of whether there is food or not. From the Yelp reviews, it seems like people just learned their lesson not to bother eating the food here.

Food doesn't produce profit like booze does.
...I do hope they are making enough $ to cover that large back room.

I really like this place, it has a real 'Cheers' vibe, every time I go I tend to get sucked a UNO match or a random open mic comedy thing. Everybody is always nice to each other, and the beer list is really good.
They do have food, I've eaten there a couple times, and it's been ok, but yeah, it's a bar with bar food.
Generally, I would much prefer places like this on Franklin than places like Mayfield etc.

So far, 739 is the closest thing Franklin Avenue has to a "Neighborhood Bar".
Washington has Half Court
Underhill has Sepia
Vanderbilt has Soda (?)
