Motorcycle accident at St. Johns and Washington

I live near the corner in question and saw the police lights as I came home about 15 minutes ago. I didn't witness this accident, but I can't say I'm surprised. There are a group of motorcycle enthusiasts who live on and near Washington Ave. who use the street as a dragstrip during the warm months.
Hope whoever is involved ends up recovering quickly.

Apparently he is in critical condition at Kings County hospital. I wish him a speedy recovery, and to everyone else, stay safe.

I walked up as they were loading the guy for the trip to the hospital. A head smash mark on the front of the buses windshield. Lots of cops, photo people from the news and cops. looks like the bus turned left in front of him.
This is the second one I have seen in 2 days. Washington and Park a guy tried to do a wheelie and flipped over backward. He left in an ambulance and I got to see the tow truck driver drag his bike across the pavement and on to a flat bed. -
These are the kind of motorcyclists that skew the statistics. I really wonder what the safety is like for someone with some sense. Hopefully the guys live to learn their lessons.

I rarely ride in NYC because of all the traffic and hazards, but have had a motorcycle lic since I was 16. I am 42.
Few things are more fun then a nice ride up the Taconic on a well built ride.
There are old riders, and there are bold riders.
But there are no old, bold riders. -
Weird. At first I thought you guys were talking about the motorcycle accident that happened Sunday evening on Washington and Prospect. Some car hit a man on a motorcycle and drove off. I didn't see it happen, but my SO rode up on her bike right after it occurred. She said the motorcyclist had been thrown incredibly far from his vehicle, but had gotten up. Cycle was smashed though. I don't know anything else.

Insurance rates for new riders and city riders are pricey, even for NYS minimums.
...but if you are 22 and male, a 1100cc crotch rocket costing $15k to buy and $3k a season to insure somehow often seems like a good idea.
-
That combo sounds damn near uninsurable. But I guess that is why motorcyclists can't get life insurance. That's really the only outcome.
I would love a 600cc "regular" bike. I don't need much.
-
you sir, have survived the testosterone surge of your twenties.
-
That's what you get for Popping Wheelies down St john's.
-
Been riding for 12 years and over 100,000 miles without a problem. I ride in the city regularly, as it's a fine way to get groceries and sure beats the subway especially when the weather is like this.
And I have life insurance (just purchased a new policy last year in fact) so I'm not sure what you're referring to, CTK.
-
Where do you put the groceries?
-
Panniers if I'm on two wheels, sidecar if on three.
-
Ah I thought motorcyclists were unable to get life insurance policies. I heard that somewhere. Good to know though. (Continue to) Ride safe man.
-
The death rates for car occupants are about 0.01% versus 0.07% for motorcyclists.
Yes, it's more likely, but still a quite insurable risk.
These figures are adjusted for number of registered cars versus registered motorcycles -- obviously, there are more drivers than riders.
-
Percentage is a percentage

But that is good to know.
-
Statistics are what insurance companies use to determine rates. Hence being a smoker for instance has far more impact than being a motorcyclist...
