rent rates these days
what are your peoples opinions about the inflated rental rates in the past 3-4 years? do any of you guys remember the time when you were able to afford to pay an apt. rent on a minimum wage job. What kind of an economy is it where people need to split the costs with a roomie just to get by. f****** outrageous.

live in a cheaper area? i mean ps is super expensive compare to other parts of brooklyn. there are other parts thats as safe and as nice just not as yuppified.

In my day, you could babysit your neighbor's kids for ten hours a week and still live on Park Avenue. What kind of world is it when you can't do this anymore? That is outrageous.

Well, don't just sit here bellyachin' about it, do something! It was a lot cheaper around here in the sleazy days. So go out and sleaze things up!
Jab somebody with a syringe! Bust in a car window! Torch some fancy-ass restaurant on Fifth Avenue! Crap on the sidewalk and make sure people see you do it!
Remember: only YOU can make Park Slope undesirable... so get off your can and take some action! -

I'm right there with you. Anyone got a crowbar? I need to smash a window and take a piss out of it.

Just do it on 5th Avenue, or below 9th Street.
Be old-school, say early '90's. -

Like hell! Let's turn the dial on this baby back to 1971! If I gotta pay more than $95 a month to live on Montgomery Place, there's something wrong with the world!
OK, time to go feed the rats. -

Subject: why does the discussion always turn this way?
I don't understand why this discussion always turns this way - people who are 'newbies' resort to this defensive tactic, as if the way Park Slope *was* was all bad. I wasn't in Park Slope in the 70's and 80's but from what I hear there was a certain charm to it, you just had to stay out of certain areas. It was bohemian, it was arty. Yes there were problems but you know what... you sell your soul a little bit when you are around gentrification too long. You have to work at jobs that may pay you a lot of money but that's almost all you can do. Or you don't get paid enough money and you scramble to get by. The neighborhood loses out when the only people who can live there are so-called "affluent." (actually studies have been done on this...)
Someone on this board wrote recently that they made a good salary or they wouldn't live in Park Slope. Well actually they wrote it somewhat more offensively. I lived in Park Slope for five years until three months ago and I never had such a privileged, entitled attitude while there - that I have noticed many of the newer people - like my new landlord who wanted to rent out my apartment for corporate housing (in a brownstone) - have.
And when old-timers write because they are distraught that they are getting pushed out of their HOMES, the majority *attack* them and say things like... get a real job! what is wrong with people who resort to this?
I don't know what Kool Aid some of you people are taking ... a page out of the Capitalist Manifesto... but I would really try to have some humility about all of this. The way the rental market is now sucks and that is all there is to it. People should be able to LIVE without selling their soul and working non-stop and only caring about superficial things.
That's all... have a great day!

Bless you cat! Well said.
From reading some of the posts on here and the PH board I certainly wouldn't want to rent from (or rent to) a lot of of the people posting.
All I can say is thank gawd for rent-stabilzation laws. -

I hope you're well-fed, Cat. I can't have you or any other cats eating any of the rats I'm buying from the pet stores and releasing on to 5th Avenue.

That dope is uncalled for. The other guy in the health club post was right about you. That is a crude, lude, and rude comment. You should show some respect to others that have a different opinion than yours. You're not being clever. Just being a horse's ##s.
