LADIES PLEASE BE CAREFUL

Looks like the warm weather is bringing out the worst

Please walk in pairs and have the car service drivers wait until you are in you home before they leave. Any other tips?

  • Frightening. Thanks for the link.

The only other tips I can think of are pretty common sense: don't talk on your phone at night, and if you're intoxicated, make sure someone walks with you, or you take a car home.

Any situation where you are not 100% aware is a potentially dangerous one.

  • Now when I walk around I carry my keys in my left hand and my rape whistle at the ready. The keys will hopefully ward off an attack and if that fails my whistle will alert the neighbors.

  • Yes, people need to be careful. It's horrifying to know a woman was "walking on Dean Street near Underhill in late April when she was "snatched" off the street and raped in a vacant lot."

Another awful fact of rape was in the article:

Of the six reported incidents, two were stranger rapes.
Four of the six reported rapes were by people the women knew.

  • I was waiting for the B45 the other day and a cab driver pulled up along side me to see if I wanted a ride. I told him I only had two dollars and would wait for the bus. He kept asking me where I was going and said he would take me anyway, that he just wanted to be my friend and help someone out. After finally just turning my head and ignoring him, he drove off and I was left feeling almost guilty, perhaps he was just a kind person trying to do some good and I was being too on-guard to accept his kindness. Then I read this article and realize that whatever his intentions, I did what was best for myself.

And the majority of rapes are committed by people known to the victims, something like 75% I think.

  • I was at the meeting where the Community Council guy from the 77th pct. was talking about this. In the case of Dean Street, he emphasized that if the gate to that vacant lot had been locked, the crime would most likely not have occurred.

Accordingly, it would make sense to follow up with lots/construction sites that are gated but not locked. If you see one, I believe you can contact 311 as it's a public safety hazard in a few different ways.

  • Check out Right Rides

    rightrides.org

    1-888-215-SAFE

They give free rides late on weekends. (Not tonight tho bec they said they did not have enough volunteers.)

  • Except that all the rapes reported as being in Prospect Heights were well east of here. Wish that the Patch would get its neighborhood boundaries straight...

  • Do you honestly believe boundry lines restrain/contain a rapist's stomping grounds? Does he magically stop at the gates of Park Slope and refuse to enter? In my book if there is a rapist operating in Brooklyn then anyone residing in Brooklyn is in danger.

Funny how the minds of certain people operate.

  • But of course, that rapist would never go into Manhattan, right? New Yorkers, LOCK YOU DOORS!!

  • is mace and pepper spray still illegal in nyc? i haven't check those laws since forever.

  • is mace and pepper spray still illegal in nyc? i haven't check those laws since forever.

    yep, still illegal.

  • its just lame, its like umm if we make it illegal people won't get them!!! yeah that would work.

me and a friend got spray by pepper spray by two thugs when i was a kid wasn't cool.

We couldn't see for like seems for ever. literally crying all the way home. One of the worst experiences I had in a life time. those blocks home were the longest.

like alot of things if they made it illegal only folks would have access to them is criminals or citizens who would run afowl of the law.

  • Pepper spray is legal in NYC, but you have to buy it from a licensed pharmacist. I think Neergard in Park Slope was found to be the closest licensed dealer last time we had this discussion.

  • a male friend was pepper sprayed by 4 guys and beat up for an iphone a few months ago.

    seemed way over the top.

what about carrying one of those telescoping metal batons?

  • telescoping metal batons are illegal

  • strange, we were at the John Jovino Gun Shop last month, and tourists kept coming in and asking for pepper spray, and the guy behind the counter kept telling everyone that it's illegal. I figured the person at a gun store would know what the rules are!

But are very effective if used properly.

  • how bout black jacks they illegal?

  • A sock with a roll of quarters in it. Neither is illegal, but can do damage to someone's head in a fight.

  • A bag of glass powder works too.

  • Bag of glass powder? That sounds like some real Old Testament shit

  • I used to carry a pad lock and metal long dog walking chain as a kid .

  • Are chains for walking long dogs different than regular dogs or short dogs?

  • lol i mean its a long dog chain :p.

  • Binaca mouth spray, listerine mouth spray all burn when sprayed into the eyes. And any girl who had "big hair" in the 80's knows that aerosol Aquanet (or other cheap hairspray) burns the shit out of your eyes :)

Personally I like travel size aerosol hair spray and a lighter.

    Das mah gurl... ;)

  • I've also heard that, while not illegal, oven cleaner spray is highly unpleasant to receive to the face. I do love the hair spray and lighter method, but that takes more coordination in a moment of panic and I know I would drop the lighter at the least.

  • And I asked at a precinct about a month ago whether mace and pepper spray were still illegal and I was told yes, very clearly and disapprovingly.

  • i agree think about it, you're about to go into action, it would take too long and good coordination to get the lighter and spraying working at the same time. also the flames are not that big :p. more flash than burn.
