Reckless Driving/Speeding by Dollar Vans — Brooklynian

Reckless Driving/Speeding by Dollar Vans

edited November -1 in Prospect Heights

Has anyone noticed the insane, reckless driving by those 15-passenger commuter vans? I’ve nearly been hit by them on three occasions. To avoid the red light on Flatbush at Park Place, they cut up Carlton and make a left on Prospect Place (blowing through the 4-way stop). Then they speed across Prospect Place and whip back onto Flatbush. They travel at dangerously high speeds, and many times they run the red light at Prospect and Flatbush without even slowing to turn.

I would like to get the city to do something about this problem. Speed bumps would be an obvious deterrent, but I’m not sure if that’s possible or how to make it happen. I also think if the city would “un-sync” the traffic lights it would remove the incentive to cut through residential streets to avoid the traffic light on Flatbush.

I called 311 and filed a complaint today. I plan to start calling every time I see it happen (which is pretty much every day). If you live near one of these blocks and are also concerned, please call 311 and log your own complaint. I imagine the more complaints that are logged, the more quickly it will be addressed. It took 10 minutes to log the complaint.

Any other ideas on how to address this problem?

I searched the archives for info on the dollar vans, but the most recent posts I found were from a year ago. That was following a serious accident last year, so it seems to be an ongoing problem.

  • Prospect pl. and Carlton is a two way stop sign, not a four way. I used to live right there and didn't notice the dollar vans doing that specifically. I did really wish the cops would sit there and just ticket everyone who drives through the stop signs. The city could make their ticket minimums for a month after just one day at that intersection. Every time I crossed the street I felt like it was a game of chicken between me and any other car. Maybe the dollar vans have started to do that within the last 3 months that I haven't lived right near that intersection?

  • You're right, tateinbk. I misspoke. It's a two-way stop since both streets are one-way. It is a dangerous intersection for pedestrians, and it's not just the dollar vans who blow through it. I'm not sure whether this short cut for the vans is a new phenomenon. For the past several months I've been home during the day/at rush hour times, so I've become more acutely aware of it.

  • What is really scary is going near that intersection in the rain or other inclement weather. There is so much screeching of tires at Carlton as cars head towards Flatbush on Prospect pl. I would refuse to cross if I saw a car coming that hadn't come to a slow enough speed. In a few cases cars slid so far into the crosswalk when they did try to stop that I would have been hit for sure had I dared try.

I was often out walking my dog and very often had a bag filled with his fecal matter. The urge to throw said bag at these cars was huge, but I'm WAY to delicate to start That kind of fight. I did do a lot of yelling and sarcastically shouting, "Noooo, Please, you go ahead. I'm sure you have somewhere Really important to be." I also have done the kick the hood of the car thing while uttering, "hey, I'm walking here." I figure if a car stops so close to me that I can kick the bumper without going out of my way, they deserved to get yelled at closely.

Again though, I'm not tough at all, and it could be argued that I'm now safer in Crown Heights than I was there with my yelling and kicking at cars. I did manage to not throw poop at any of them and I consider that to be a job well done on my part.

  • they always go crazy nothing new.

  • Regarding the speed bumps (or "speed humps" as DOT calls them), you can request one on your street by writing to: Commissioner of Transportation, 55 Water Street, New York, NY 10041.

Note the process will take months, if not years. My Block Association requested for one more than a year ago. We included a petition of support signed by people living on the street. We have spoken to local elected officials (it helps to have Council Member Letitia James on your side).

The whole thing takes a while because DOT needs to conduct traffic surveys/tests, and determine that having a speed hump will not adversely affect anyone else on the street.

This is totally asinine, but if there have been accidents at your intersection related to the speeding, chances are, the speed hump will be approved faster. (Not in the business of preventing accidents before they happen, I'm afraid.)

As for the speeding problem, bring it up at your next Community Board meeting, make sure your local elected officials know about the problem. And keep calling 311, it's good to have a log of how many times this has happened!

  • Go to community precinct meetings and make a stink.

  • The community precinct meetings are a good idea. Meglime, I moved and the PH meetings are so far off my radar, but if you need someone else to come and make a stink with you I'd be happy to if I can make it. Feel free to contact me for further stink making attempts. I'm not sure how much my word will hold considering I don't live there anymore, but it's a subject that still gets me going.

I found yellow cabs and then livery cabs to be the worst. It's like the yellow cabs are just thinking "I hate going to brooklyn, I need to get the hell out before someone flags me down and asks to go further into Brooklyn". They then see the light at Flatbush and don't really register Carlton ave until someone tries to walk across. Then they screech all over the place.

  • I learned from the Prospect Heights Neighborhood Development Council today that the DOT plans to install a new traffic light at Park Place and Carlton this summer. A campaign spearheaded by the Carlton Ave and Dean Street block associations made this happen. The light should deter the vans from making the detour. So I guess we'll see what happens! Thank you all for your helpful suggestions.

  • Do the community meetings actually work?

I went to the last one in June and while the food was nice.

No one really was ever able to say anything.

Not really sure why we are supposed to spend our night making and effort and attending, when all it's all about the politicians doing speeches about how they care what people have to say.

As far as the vans go, I feel your pain. Believe me. I have ridden my bike down Flatbush only to be honked at by the Vans. Not sure how they even get driver's license cause clearly they are really bad drivers.

  • the north flatbush avenue business improvement district has been working with DOT and the 78th and 77th police precinct to crackdown on not just these dollar vans but all speeding cars. Speed bumps are not possible because of the buses.Countdown signals are going in soon for pedestsrians and bump outs at corners will be aded to make a wier turn onto Flatbush Avenue. But, that may not necessarily eter cars or vans from passing through a red light. The best thing to do, is start a petition to crackdown on legalizing these vans and drivers. Most drivers are driving on suspened license and use an out of state stolen license. Most dont wear seat belts, speeding, stopping in the middle of street to pick up passengers etc. Then get a meeting with you councilmember. I believe Councilmember Letitia James is the Prospect Park side of the street and Councilmember Levin is the other. Calling 311 is not going to do anything,AFTER someone went through a red light. Try to write down the license plate number and file a report with the police precinct. This way, if there is ever an accident iwth that van, it will be on record that they repeaily spee through red lights. or maybe call the North Flatbush Avenue BID, they have been instrumental in helping the community and they are a bunch of really great folks there.

I think that the only thing that will crack down on speeding and red-light running on Flatbush (and elsewhere) are traffic cameras.

  • Much as I hate traffic cameras (a lot!), I suspect you're right.

  • Or a concerted campaign like the bike-ticketing one.

You know, the NYPD actually getting off its ass and enforcing traffic laws, aka one of the most dangerous aspects of life in NYC.

  • I had an incident with these vans where they stopped in the middle of a bike lane, while I was on my bike & I yelled out at them. Then for the whole rest of my bike ride down Flatbush, they were honking at what I thought was me.

Now thinking about it, that might just be the way they get their fares, like the annoying jiffy cab drivers.

I did take down the license plate number of the van & call 311, which transferred me to the precinct. I waited to speak with some police officers and gave them the paper with the van's license plate number on it. Who knows if anything ever happened.

Would love to make a petition. Don't have the slightest clue how to go about that though. If there is one someone started, would love to sign it.

    Please keep me posted.

  • you should take the honks as an insult. It means you look like you want a ride. During the MTA strike the vans were praised. As Bloomy says that cab service will be extended to other via anything other than yellow cabs the dollar van will become the vehicle of choice for crime, rape, robbery, extortion, just to start. Every van needs TLC oversite..sure it would take a week to get all the vans wrangled up but that may be too much to ask. look at the people in the vans, they don't care about you and your bike, dog, kid or stroller they are just passing through

  • Speed humps work somewhat, just fyi they cannot be placed along existing bus routes or snow emergency routes.

  • It was around 5:30pm today. My wife saw the aftermath and it was BAD. There was a lot of blood and vomit and the ambulance, fire and police were already on the scene. Our neighbor helped stabilize the woman. She is a medical professional and mentioned level 1 trauma. Does anyone have any more info?

    I hope she is ok.

The dollar vans are a menace!

  • I don't know anything about this particular incident, but there was a whole thread dedicated to dangerous driving by dollar vans at that very intersection. Sad that nothing has been done about it, and now someone has paid the price.

  • I have a sad update to my original post. A dollar van hit a pedestrian at the intersection of Carlton and Prospect Place around 5:30 p.m. today. Apparently it was a pretty bad accident. By the time I walked up, the woman who had been hit was already in the ambulance and they were taking her to the hospital. There were two ambulances, a fire truck and some police officers on the scene.

Anyone know the woman or know how she's doing? I really hope she's okay!

  • Mousta - I think your neighbor is our very close friend. Our families had been at her place, and were walking to mine for dinner when our friend (i.e., your neighbor) went into action immediately to address the trauma situation. Yes, it was bad, but I don't know the victim's condition now.

On our way back home a couple of hours later, we watched three of those dollar vans race around that same corner of Carlton and Prospect, all head to tail and completely ignoring the stop sign.

I respect the service provided, but I also hate the dollar vans' wanton disregard for basic public safety.

Harming and killing pedestrians is really no damper on their business unless there's real and punitive oversight. Let's hope that happens.

A witness has created a thread on today's (9/14/11) Dollar Van accident at that intersection:

    http://brooklynian.com/forum/prospect-heights/woman-hit-by-dollar-van-on-prospect-place-and-carlton#post-741670

  • The two threads have been merged.

  • I just threw this together. Let me know how I can improve it:

  • That intersection is bad without Dollar Vans, 6:30 in the morning I stopped on Prospect, looked, started turning right onto Carlton and just some car does the tap on the brakes and step on it through the stop sign on Carlton, proceeds to the traffic light at Dean, and blows through the red light, turns right on Dean and that's all I've got.....

I there a way you can let people contributing to it opt to leave their name or email? People would still be able to leave info anonymously if they wished, by this option would give it a certain credibility that an anonymous map would lack. ....It would have a greater chance of getting attention from the TLC, politicians and media.

The information could not be dismissed as people having a long standing grudge against Dollar Vans ....because the contributors would represent swaths of the NYC demographics.

This is a great idea. Thanks for pulling it together.

  • Hello - this was my mother in law who was visiting from Italy, and going to pick up the boys at afterschool. She is under observation at the moment. Thank you to the kind neighbor/s who helped - as I am just back from the hospital, I would love to get more information from those who were there/helped as I don't have many details. Any way to get in touch? Sorry I am new to this forum.....

  • Scemo - I just PMd you.

  • A traffic light will be installed at the intersection of Park and Carlton. This will force vans taking the detour to stop at a red light at Park so there will be less of a time savings to taking Carlton.

Work has already begun on the light and new crosswalks.

  • dont worry folks, as mentioned above, the North Flatbush Avenue BID and the Carlton Avenue Block Association has been working with DOT for several months on this dilema in our neighborhood. IF you walk by the area, you will notice orange markings which indicate that a flashing stop signal will be installed as soon as possible. We are asking DOT to implement this new signal as soon as possible. We are also working with members of the community polic precinct to step up enforcement in this area and to all those who disregard the red lights and stop signs, and no left turns in our area, including bicyclists, dollar vans, speeding cars, trucks, etc.

As always, the North Flatbush Avenue BID is working hard to improve your community. If you want to know how you can get more involved in your community, go to www.nfbid.com.
