***STOLEN VESPA***
Hello my fellow Slopers:
I am hoping that you can help me in finding the culprit who stole my Vespa. Although I reported it to the local police, they basically informed me that it was not a high priority for them. EXCUSE ME! This was my only mode of transportation to and from my job in upper Manhattan. This theft occurred 1 week ago but in that time I have seen my vespa zip by me on 8th avenue, being driven by a youth, on two separate occasions. Obviously the thief lives close by so I am hoping my fellow slopers can assist me in catching him.
Thief description:
Male black in his late teen's or early 20's riding my vespa recklessly with no helmet and no rear plate.
Vespa description:
A dull Lime green in color Vespa with no rear plate.
PICTURE TO FOLLOW.
(Thankfully I remove the plate every night when I park it on the sidewalk.)
Location of theft:
Near 1st street and Prospect Park West.
If anyone has any information about my vespa please contact me via a forum message.
Thank you.

Why don't you walk or have someone drive you around the neighborhood to see if you can spot it parked someplace. I would comb park slope...since you have seen it there twice.
-
Thank you all for all the possible leads.
Special thanks to Jacob. Thanks for the information regarding the Walt Whitman residences by Fort Greene park. So far that is the strongest tip I have received and I shall take a walk down there tonight after midnight. I will see if my little "Pistachio" turns up there.
Thank you once again.

I really wish you the best of luck retrieving your ride. I had a suzuki 650 DR SE stolen a few years ago. I still think about it EVERY time I see a bike

-
Is that a Lx150 or a 250?
If you haven't already you should post it to the boards of the various scooter clubs that are in the the area. Usual Suspects, NY Scooter Club etc.
You could also post a flyer throughout the 'hood stating there is a no questions asked reward of $250. Put the VIN number on the flyer.
option 1: The present rider can't sell it without a title, so I suspect he'll just leave it some where once it is trashed.
option 2: The present rider will decide to just steal a plate of someone else's bike, and ride it until winter, then leave it somewhere.

This is Deja Vu all over again.
My scooter was stolen about 2 months ago from right in front of my house. It was chained to a thick tree but that did not stop the neighborhood malcontents from stealing my prized possession. It was one of the saddest days of my life
The public buildings by Forte Green Park are an excellent place to start. I have gone there myself on a quest to find my scooter. I found a few stripped cars and scooters in the parking area but thank God I did not find the carcass of my beloved motorized steed.
Till this day I keep a look out for my scooter but something tells me it is not in the area. I too contacted the police but they didn't bother to give me a call back although I was promised a detective would call. I just think that they don't care about us. Perhaps they think we are made out of money. News flash, Mr. Policeman....Although I purchased another Vespa it did set me back a few bucks. I am not made out of money and I do not have a printing press in the basement of my townhouse.
While we are on the subject of looking for stolen scooters, below I have enclosed a picture of my stolen chariot. I used to call it "MEAN GREEN". Here I thought I was the only person who named their Vespa. Go figure.

Good luck in finding your scooter.

To the poster I want to say..."AWESOME POST!"
Honestly, I mean this sincerely. I was a victim of a theft a few days back. Foolish me, I was riding my scooter at 2 a.m on the west side of Prospect park when I stopped for a red light. I was approached by 2 African American teenagers who demanded my scooter. Before I could throttle up the gas one of them grabbed me by the collar and swung me off violently. I hit the ground pretty hard and I could vividly remember both of them jumping on my vespa and speeding off. Besides obvious bruises to my pride I was o.k but I was stripped of my only mode of transportation.
I too reported the theft to the police and to their credit they were quite polite and helpful. I am hoping they are able to get my scooter back. Judging by the posts I suspect that there is a rash of scooter thefts plaguing the Brooklyn area. I would like to thank the poster for bringing this to the attention of other scooter owners. Perhaps this thread can bring awareness to what is happening.
SCOOTER RIDERS OF THE BROOKLYN AREA, PLEASE BE CAREFUL OUT THERE!
For some odd reason these thieves are targeting scooters in order to make a quick buck.
If anyone comes across a lavender/lilac scooter(I re-painted it myself)with quasi black racing stripes please hit me up on my email or post here. My scooter was a uniquely color 250cc vespa that pretty much stood out due to its color.

TardyMonk, I am sorry for your loss. It is a sad state of affairs when the economy influences the behavior of a select few and manipulates them into taking property from others. I can only surmise that things will only get worse in the future as the economy continues to tank. In addition to your recommendations might I suggest that people start taking their scooters indoors and also invest in stronger anti-theft devices.
Things are about to get crazier in Brooklyn.
-
Tardy, you are correct that awaremness is the best weapon against these individuals and their criminal ways.
**INTERESTING DEVELOPMENT**
I have been hanging posters all over the Park Slope area only to discover that someone is taking them down. Why is this so? I find these actions completely puzzling and annoying. If this is not the actions of the very criminals then some warped individual in the neighborhood is actively undermining my endeavors to locate my vespa. If you are the culprit and you are reading this thread , I implore you to please stop taking down the posters. Thank you.
I only pray that it is not a fellow Park Sloper putting obstacles in my path. I will agree that there are some sick people in this world who seek joy out of other peoples tribulations. As for the other posters who have lost scooters, I feel your pain. The lose of a valued mode of transportation is not something I would would wish upon anyone.
Until these vespa thieves are caught let us keep our eyes open and our property secured. Knowledge is power and most importantly forewarned is being forearmed.

It may have nothing to do with your Vespa. There is an autistic individual in the neighborhood who rips down posters... that's just what he does.

I fear you may be right!

Funny you should mention the fellow who rips down signs.
I posted a sign not to long ago about a missing cat, which returned 5 days later, and I caught the afore mentioned individual ripping down my signs.
I confronted him and quickly noticed that he was not altogether there. This is just something that in his limited intellectual capacity he likes to do. Pay him no mind and continue to post your signs.
If you want a list of the blocks to stay away from just send me a private message.
Regarding the scooter thefts, I do not know much about this matter but I have been a victim of a stolen bicycle tire. It must be a sign of the times.
Damn you Obama!
I wish we could re-elect Bush.

I am pretty sure it is illegal to tear down another person's property. If I were you I would call the police and have that person arrested for defacement of public property.
I really do hate it when self anointed mayor's of the neighborhood take it upon themselves to try to tell us how we are suppose to live. They have these silly rules they make up in their heads and then they assume the rest of us must live by them.
It is called neighborhood tyranny and no one should stand for it. Have them arrested or put a choke hold on their pocket by suing them. -
Actually it is illegal to post signs on city property, so just settle yourself down.
-
The only place you have a right to post flyers is on private property with permission of the owner. Posting flyers on lamposts, fireboxes, utility boxes, etc. is against the law and can result in significant fines from the Sanitation Department should they choose to track you down.
-
We are not discussing if the signs are posted legally or illegally but instead whether the person ripping them down has the authority to do so. Obviously the person vandalizing the signs is not working under the capacity of any law enforcement entity so the actions of this person are 100% illegal.
For all intent and purposes the person posting the signs received permission to post these signs on the the neighborhood facades, so why exactly is the poster of the signs the villain and not the person ripping them down? The rational of some of the people on this forum is truly mind boggling.
If this person continues to rip the signs down litigation is in order. If the person committing the crime is not of sound mind then sue the person responsible for this poster vandalizer. Maybe the person needs proper supervision or needs to be placed in some sort of institution. Why should people of this neighborhood tolerate such behavior? -

WCW-
For extra points, maybe we will get a reference to phantom PM's that claim lots of people have rsvp'd privately because they don't want to be harassed on this board for "standing up for justice". -

No need for such over the top theatrics when litigation basically solves the problem. There is nothing like a good lawsuit to cool the jets of a neighborhood bully intent on taking down posters.
Since when has poster hanging become the scourge of a neighborhood while poster ripping has been elevated to acceptable behavior? Some of these replies are amusing at best.

Mod Note: Stay On Topic People
Good luck on finding your scooter, man.
-
Personally, I would have named those scooters something cute like Scrumbles, but I guess Mean Green or Pistachio also work.
Best of luck:
a. finding your scooter,b. having the police department meet your definition of
polite, andc. litigating against the guy who removes flyers.
-
I do not know if this qualifies as a scooter theft but one of the parishioners had her round-about scooter stolen while she was in services at the Free Methodist Church. I highly doubt that this incident ties in with original poster's theft but I think it is worth mentioning. It was parked on the side of the church when it went missing. Some suspect it was kids joy riding but it has been a few days since theft and nothing has turned up.

Amishpride, another place to check if you have not already checked is the parking lots over at the Wyckoff Gardens developments over by Baltic and 3rd avenues. This is a haven for stolen cars and scooters. Go take a look but do it in the day time hours because the neighborhood is not a safe one. If you spot your scooter do not try to take it. Do yourself a favor and call the police before you try to retrieve your property.
Good luck. -

Good luck.I would strongly advise against the above recommendation. Let the police do what they are paid to do. By you going to this dreary neighborhood you are only looking for trouble. Keep in mind that this part of town is not exactly friendly to us so called "interlopers". Be guided by what the police tell you and stop trying to play Nancy Drew.

*Warning to vespa owners who park on the sidewalks or near curbs in the Brooklyn Heights and Park Slope areas*
I was informed by a police officer friend of mine that there is a group of individuals who drive around in a van and who scoop up scooters locks and all. If anyone sees suspicious men putting scooters in the back of a van please call 911 ASAP. My friend said that vespas are a hot commodity on the black market now a days.
-
Best thing to do in order to combat anyone from trying to carry away one's vespa is to chain it to a thick tree. There are many trees up and down the streets of Park Slope so the best solution is to invest in a Kryptonite chain and lock your scooter to a tree.

-
The only thing you will accomplish by chaining a scooter to a tree is to hurt the environment. On a hot day like this why don't you try watering the tree instead of using it as bike rack.
Don't you think that a person who drives around in a van intent on stealing scooters is not armed with a pair of bolt cutters?
-
He might very well be armed with a pair of bolt cutters but perhaps seeing that this specific scooter is chained to a tree instead of being free standing will make him think twice before wasting the effort. He might just move one to another scooter that is less secured. In the long run the scooter chained to the tree will most likely survive another day without being stolen. One's odds are better if your scooter is secured to a large object.

Howdy, Stranger!
