Naturaland Erasing Dates off of food
I called them out on it today - their reply is that they don't do it.
anyway after unsuccessfully trying to make my own Kombucha* i've decided to stick with GT's.
A couple weeks ago I noticed there was a Botanical version of GT with honeysuckle in it - I decided to pass because they were "expiring" ("Use By" Actually) that day. But I took a mental note to go back and buy some next time because surely there would be inventory rotation. I go back today and the dates were erased on the top of the bottles. I always considered this a high end grocery store -- but no more.
I've bought expired food plenty of times from the Keyfood on Washington -- but that was because of my own lack of vigilance -- I have never seen Keyfood on Washington erase or alter dates. Don't see why I have to trek across town to a "ghetto gourmet grocery store in Park Slope" when I have one right around the corner.

*I did make Kombucha but it was way too strong and not as tasty as the store bought kind.

That is really really weird. Did you talk to the manager? This might be one of those times that it's worth alerted the health department. Who knows what other items they're tampering with?

spoke to the cashier. I was calm but loud enough that the other cashier seemed concerned as well.
Did not ask for a Manager. I suppose that I could have brought one of the drinks up to the counter with me but I didn't.I think it may be legal to sell Drinks/food past the "Use by" date but not sure about legality of erasing the date.
Even if it is "legal" it is not something I should have to think about when I pay top dollar at a gourmet grocery. Its worth noting that the Keyfood on Washington has more recently reduced the price of items expiring that day but they leave the expiration date on the package -- I bought lettuce cheap this way. This seems like a good way to do business.

I'm a big fan of Natural Land, I shop there pretty much daily, but this is not cool. I find expired food at all kinds of markets in NYC--I've even caught expired dairy products at Whole Foods. I check every date at every market, but if Natural Land is erasing them, then there's no date to check.
If you really wanted to dime them out, I would call the product's distributor. There's potential for huge liability if people were to get sick from consuming expired products.
Let's hope that they've learned their lesson.

technically its not expired.
I just came back from Compare Foods which is a bit of a schlep but fantastic supermarket. The fish section is pretty good though I would have been even more impressed if they had live lobsters...though Natural Land has a better fish section...
In any case they also have Kombucha... unfortunately not the Botanical versions I was looking for (especially the one with honey suckle)... I got Passionberry Bliss (tried it for the first time...really good) with an "Enjoy By" date of 09/05/11 for $3.99 ... think Natural Land is like $4.50+ ...and we're just talking 16 oz of a drink here. -

Buzzed on Kombucha & Rum, I just finished gutting & filleting (an cooking) blue moon seabass.
with sauteed onions and peppers (also farmer's market). The secret ingredient is Newman's Own Black Bean Salsa.Currently streaming "Bastards of the Party" on Netflix which is a fascinating documentary on the Bloods & CRIPS
