Y Personal Fitness?

Has anyone used the Y Personal Fitness program at either the Prospect Park or armory YMCAs?

Curious what you thought about it. The video makes it look like it is just for like...women over 50...although the description sounded good for everyone.

I basically was just looking for a way to add some focus to my workout plan. I know I could just make a plan myself but, hey, I'm totally lacking in self-discipline and do better when I know someone is checking up on me.

  • I don't have any experience with that particular program, but I would recommend the Parks Department.

They are a lot cheaper in price. I know they have a lot of different activities for seniors as well.

I used to go to the St. John's Center. The price is $75 a year. They also have a pool. You can use any of the gyms even in the city if you want to vary it up for no extra cost.

    Good Luck!

  • I am under 50 (by 4 years), and a Prospect Park Y member. For years I've done personal training with Stanley Mills - he is a former pro basketballer (he played in Europe, I believe), and really great. While his manner is extremely friendly and kind, he nevertheless manages to get an amazing performance - he makes me aspire to wow him, rather than being a drill sergeant. I am moving in a few months and won't be able to work with him anymore, and that makes me sad.

Juanita is also incredible - she's trained my oldest daughter and has done a great job.

  • Thanks for the trainer recommendations. I think I might just go for it - four sessions with a trainer for free is, well, the price is right. If they give me a choice of trainers I'll try and snag one of those~

  • I did it at the Armory. It wasn't really like a trainer, in my experience - just a young person who made sure I was using the machines right, and set me up with a book to log my progress. Although I didn't get much from the trainer, I did find it very useful to be enrolled in the program. It made me go to the Y a lot more often and regularly.

  • Thanks, Parkplace, appreciate the info.
