PROTESTERS TO RESIST SPRAYING OF PESTICIDES BEGINNING MONDAY
*** Meet at 6 pm Monday, 8/21, at entrance to Church Avenue station on F train,
corner of Albermarle Rd. and McDonald Avenue in Brooklyn.
Residents of Brooklyn and Staten Island, along with the No Spray Coalition <www>
condemn this latest round of NYC's spraying of dangerous pesticides to kill
mosquitoes taking place Monday, August 21st to Tuesday, August 22nd throughout parts
of both boroughs of New York City.
They will join protests that have already taken place in recent weeks in Winnipeg
(Canada), Chicago, Florida, St. Louis, and California.
The pesticides sprayed all contain the cancer-causing chemical piperonyl butoxide.
They also contain undisclosed and dangerous so-called "inert ingredients."
In addition, pyrethroids such as Sumithrin, the active ingredient in Anvil 10 +
10, have been shown to be hormone (endocrine) disruptors and neurotoxins as well
as serious lung irritants.
These chemical pesticides are especially dangerous to children, the elderly, and
those who are immune compromised.
The pesticides also kill off natural predators of mosquitoes such as dragonflies,
which eat large amounts of mosquitoes every hour. The result of each round of spraying
is MORE, not fewer, mosquitoes.
Each year, City officials have put forth less and less information as to why they
decide to spray pesticides and have started spraying earlier and earlier in the
evening when people are more likely to be on the streets and directly affected by
the spraying.
The NoSpray Coalition is putting out a call to people throughout the City to block
the spraytrucks and to take other actions deemed necessary to save our lives from
the dangerous sprays they are using. The Coalition is attempting to contact the
drivers' union. This is not a game, the so-called "cure" is so much
worse than the initial disease that one wonders why the City continues to pursue
this extremely harmful way of killing mosquitoes .... and the people of New York.

Thanks for writing. There are varying tactics and it's not definite by any means. I don't plan to block trucks either. There will be various things for people to do from theatre to handing out flyers. It is up to people's individual discretion how 'serious' they want to be about it. All are welcome!!

And so irrational fear about West Nile has begat irrational fear about pesticide spraying. Although I agree that the West Nile hysteria is overblown, I think the reduction of the mosquito population in our area is a worthy goal in itself.

Well I don't agree but the true problem is that it doesn't just affect mosquitoes, it influences and impacts adversely the ENTIRE ecosystem. Predators of mosquitoes such as dragonflies are killed. Dragonflies eat a tremendous amount of mosquitoes per hour. Ladybugs are killed, bees are killed by this pesticide -- I think we agree bees are rather important - butterflies are impacted as well as birds and fish. It is toxic to fish if it leeches into the water supply.
Where does the killing stop? It doesn't.
And then people get seriously sick from it.
It is no "irrational fear" and to reduce it to that is misguided.

I would accept everything that you said, except for this statement, which is just plain not true. A very few people may have allergic reactions or asthma exacerbations from the spraying, but the vast majority of people will have no adverse effects at all. -

which puts more money in the chemical industry's pockets

People are irrationally afraid of the words "toxic" and poison" because they fail to recognize the concept of a dose-reponse curve. I've quoted Paracelsus before on similar threads, and I'll do it again, because he put it so elegantly:

Actually, it's a series of 5 shots, each with a tiny needle (one shot each on days #1, 3, 7, 14 and 28 after exposure to rabies). But it'll be worth it for that sweet delicious bat meat! -

I dunno man. You may have your licenses and all, but Ricky Frascarelli (my best friend in 7th grade) claims it was 42 shots - and he was usually pretty reliable. He also had the lowdown on some rumor regarding Rod Stewart, but the particulars escape me... -

first of all... the epa has listed piperonyl butoxide -- the synergist in the mix of Anvil 10 + 10 which is being used -- as a "suspected" carcinogen, only because they are playing with the chemical companies. it is and just dodged being listed as such. secondly, sumithrin, the active ingredient, has been shown to be a hormone disruptor and lung irritant. are those not serious enough for you?
the more you are exposed to pesticides, the more they weaken your immune system. they are made to kill. being cavalier about it does not protect you.
what makes you think the department of health has studied this "extensively?" do you know that from first hand knowledge or from their press releases?
what makes you think the amount doesn't affect people? is that also from their press releases? wake up and smell the coffee ! er... pesticides! or ...actually, don't do that. close your windows.
do you not think that guiliani was the perfect person to put forth the pesticide spraying by helicopters akin to a military operation?
maybe they have no reason to inflate this and maybe they do. governments have lied before, they have poisoned people before, they have lied about what they are doing. why should it be any different today... because you read a press release and decided they were telling the truth?

In the past week, I've gotten four mosquito bites on my face, one on my ear, one on a small toe, and one on the sole of my foot. This is in addition to various bites on normal places on my arms and legs, and I got nearly all of them sitting in my fully-screened apartment. When I come up out of the Benadryl haze long enough, I curse the little blighters. I think they seek me out. In any case, I'm fully in favor of any plan that kills bunches of them, West Nile or no West Nile. -

I'm with you all the way - I watched one humongous mosquito bite me twice on the wrist while sitting in my living room before I could swat it (and miss!) I've never seen them this bad. And the Prospect Park bad drainage problems just create beautiful little pools for these suckers to breed.

Oh my god, am I actually agreeing with Carnivore on something?
I would just like to see the studies of how much of the pesticide is
harmful. Because almost anything can be toxic in high enough doses--for
example water (the fraternity initiate who died of drinking too much water
two years ago). I do think pesticides are inherently bad and horrible for
the environment. I would be sorry to see my praying mantis family wiped out.
But I also think the Department of Health, while possibly misinformed, is
not deviously trying to hurt the population. Since I am so sick of
mosquitos this year, I am kind of relieved that they are spraying but of
course would like to be better informed.
But what I really want to know is DID they spray in Park Slope this year or
not?? -

I didn't see Park Slope included even though the West Nile cases were in the Slope's zip code and not ours. Just curious about th conspiracy theory aspect of this. -

This is the first time Brooklyn is being sprayed this year. Staten Island has been sprayed repeatedly. The list of what areas have been sprayed is at the link above.
