Irene: Bring your stuff inside!
Just wanted to re-emphasize this for everyone:
If you have anything loose in your yard or on your deck, stoop or patio, bring it inside! This includes patio furniture, garbage cans, potted plants, toys, gardening equipment, construction materials and anything else that could be picked up and thrown.
A Category 1 hurricane (like Irene) can easily pick up any object and punch them through a window OR wall and injure or kill.
Ten minutes of work today will make a big difference tomorrow.

Thanks for the post.
I am appalled at how many people still haven't cleared their outside patio at my building. People still have their grills out and not secured! Tons of small potted plants and flimsy furniture still outside!
I'm going to give my neighbors till 5pm (they are driving back from who knows where), then I'm bringing all their potted plants and bikes etc. stuff into my apartment so they don't go flying. -
There is a general sense of cluelessness when it come to such things in NYC. We are lucky enough to have a back yard and we just spent all morning cleaning everything up and strapping down what could not be inside. Most of our neighbors have tons of loose stuff in their yards and they don't seem to be doing anything about it. A lot of people seem to thing preparing for this consists of buying beer and putting tape on the windows.

we brought lots and lots of stuff in from outside.
I'm resisting the urge to grill in the living room and threaten my own life.
